Definitely some differences and factors in there but its true we are probably undervaluing JVR, but to be honest lately the "blog world" going rate for a #2 defensmen is Crosby+OV when they were 24. - BKups
It's strange to see but I think a lot of people are seriously undervaluing JVR based on him being "soft".
I looked at the top 30 scorers this year and don't think any of them are available. Most make a poop load more than JVR does too.
Imagine a playoff bound team being able to add a 25+ goal scorer for about 2.7 million. I keep seeing random young Dman (from a very defensively organized team so you will see regression), cap dump and the obligatory 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Can't Imagine Lou wastes much time on that call |

A lot of people really want Shattenkirk.
Alzner is better in my eyes. But will be cheaper just due to the hype around Shatty's offense.
He plays 20+ mins a night without a lick of PP time. Him and Rielly or Gardiner would be lovely. |

I wonder if Andersen gets the rangers tomorrow night, or senators on sat night.
Harder team (rangers) vs team just above them in standing and division (ottawa)
Can't see him getting both games after last weekend. |

The team is better without Phil because the team is no longer ALL ABOUT PHIL.
I agree with all of you points on how we have improved. But we have been able to do all of that because Phil was gone.
The Leafs are not the Penguins. Phil sits in a room with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Kunitz, Fleury....a big group of leadership that has won the Cup. It's not a room with Phil and Phaneuf controlling the radio and deciding not to salute the fans.
The Leafs are much better without Phil last season, this season and in the future. I'm feel the same with the idea of moving out JVR.
Give me a Wayne Simmonds type and Trouba type with one more 3/4 D...maybe Orlov cause he hits like a truck, then plan the parade. - underhill14

.........He plays the most shorthanded minutes on the Jets d and is relied on heavily defensively. And only recently has gotten looks on the PP with Myers being hurt. A lot more aggressive physically and can still skate.
Put bluntly....his style is so different from Gardiners. |

You've taken over my hate for Gardiner
He's a little better than you give him credit for...sure he's prone to bonehead mistakes...but he's better than Hunwick/Polak/Marincin/Carrick and anyone else not named Rielly/Z and some of his stats show him being our best D. ( not that agree totally )

Not if he's their best player....it's a little easier for him playing 3rd fiddle behind 2 superstars. He came to the Leafs....didnt make us any better.

Probably with the Rangers. Seems like he wants to go to the east.
Toronto is possible. Just it might be a hard trade to figure out. |

Stop, Phil makes any team better. - bobbyisno1
You can't make that statement definitively because...well...it's not true....Phil didn't make our team better. Fact. Phil didn't make the Bruins better. Fact.
Phil filled a hole on a very strong team and made them just enough better on the 3rd line for a very successful Cup run. Fact.
Sorry guys like Phil do not make teams better like a Toews, Crosby, McDavid....even Matthews. And, if you don't have the other guys, Phil can make your team worse. |
