I don't understand this thought process....they have always made a nobody winger into a star. They are no longer capable of that level of play. Can you not see that the real problem with the Sedins is the rather steep decline of their skills
- Bullfrog77

They have, but it was always the "right" type of nobody they turned into a star (aka 20 goal scorer Hansen last year). As they age there is definitely more emphasis and need for that right player. Someone with speed and grit, as was the case with all successful Sedin linemates before

I would say they have slowed down, but their skills are still the same. The still protect the puck better along the boards than most of the Canucks and can still pass the puck in the smallest of windows. I am not too worried about them losing those abilities any time soon

Ummmm they are 36

you can argue until you are blue in the face.

"Sedins" is not Swedish for "ageless wonders" you know

Isn't this essentially the tank vs try to win argument again?
The mgmt is not on board with a tank.
players are not on board with a tank.

- dbot

I guess that depends on whether you are taking a long term health or short term profit view of the team.

I wouldn't want players on the Canucks that want to tank. But if they lose some in the process of player development, I'm okay with that as long as they work hard every night.

Makes zero sense...

Benning: "Unless the no-trade players approach me, we're going to hold the fort and go from there."

- VanHockeyGuy

What i read between the lines is the vets r here to win & help.
Loyalty to the cause or if they want to move on they can ask.
If a vet asks for a trade & waives it is all on him.
JB kept the vets he likes & thinks r needed.
Cup chasers r not team players IMO
If retiring say next year they may waive to help us get picks.
Thats what we would prefer most otherwise leaders stay the course.
JB is no dummy & this tactic makes a ton of sense telling players u r here to make the push for playoffs or leave if u have another agenda.

This is the first year I've been totally frustrated with them. They are pretty useless, and not effective NHL players anymore. I get loyalty and all, but next year should be their last in the NHL IMO.
- Scooby_Doo

They will prolly agree with u unless they reinvent themselves.
I don't see that happening though.

Well if games were won by how well you protect the puck , then sure maybe they still rock. But talking about " the right kind of winger " smacks of they now need someone to carry the play for them...ie jannick last year. We saw their production drop in the second half for three years now...call a spade a spade.

I think you are trying to make excuses for Stecher. The kid will learn from this but ultimately it was a low percentage play, clogged lanes, nothing to shoot at, he should have slowed the play down, created some time and space, or wait until the SO. Either way, he will learn from it.
- Codes1087

No excuses. I agreed with you on low percentage. It unfolded that way. Said at outset each time. Just pointing out with seconds ticking away he went for it. Slowing down the clock probably would have run out. Remember the game Hank did that on PP this season. People would be howling at that. The probability of what actually happened was unfthamoble at the time. The shot and reaction to defend after should have been better to prevent.

But it's all moot now. I guess he will learn something, angle or taking a step to open up. But I hope it's not to refrain from shooting.

I'd prefer the coach noticed it and didn't leave them on the ice for the last 1:45 of overtime.

Since you are confused I will break it down for you. The team has UFA's they could/should move. By keeping them they are staying the course for the stated goal of trying to make the playoffs. By not Selling they buy into the playoff goal. However, lack of depth of assets prevents them moving futures for rentals or adding a player upgrade piece. A buy situation they can't afford.

By the way it's also poking some fun at the issue stating it that way.
Lighten up okay

- Nuck4U

Not selling does not make them buyers. By doing nothing, they are simply a team that does nothing.

Can't Blame Benning for players being given NTC's before his time.... The players signed the contract, they have a right to waive or stay. All Benning can do is voice is opinion on having the door open to players approaching him and asking for a trade and waiving. What else is he supposed to do? He has no right to force a player, who signed something, to opt out and move their lives somewhere else.
- Codes1087

He has every right to force any player to do what he wants to help us improve long term. That said integrity goes a lot further for future contracts whether our RFA's or new UFA's.

And it should be his right to stay if he pleases. It's completely out of Bennings Hands. All he can do is plant the seed over the radio (which the players and their agents will eventually hear) to say that he would be open if the players opt to approach him.
- Codes1087

I get you. Keeps the door unlocked if not open by the statement. But when he wanted to move a guy in this situation before he didn't balk at asking, Hammer, Bieksa, etc. JB just doesn't want open season circus hysteria on trades and probably wants the team to go for playoffs too. This Vegas expansion makes thing even more complicated as well.

Hansen couldnt carry any line. Hes an example of the right fit, just like most NHL lines. No question they are slowing down, they are getting older, its what happens. Even Jagr has had worse production in the past 5+ years and came back with better results after

LOL - he has ZERO right to "force" anyone to waive ANYTHING after they signed a legally binding contract that entitles them to no trade clauses. That's like you phoning your cell phone company with 12 months left in your contract (without penalty or paying to end it) and "FORCING" them to end the contract because you saw a better promotional deal with a different provider that would benefit you... life doesn't work like that. You can't break rules to further yourself.

They are still effective, they are just no longer a 2 man line, they need a 3rd player instead of "generic player 1"

Then tell me why they were scoring earlier in the season with Hansen...and have gone in the tank without him? Not a small sample size...Sedins have been cold for over a month. And your seriously going to compare the second leading scorer in nhl history to the Sedins? He has almost as many points as they have together....come on man

That is naive. NMC or NTC r not cemented. Creative ways around them.
As for a provider yes i did get a better deal doing just that. Did not force anything just mentioned i would change asap. Money talks & they want mine.
No clue what these rules u refer to r. FYI i am no conformist nor eat what someone feeds me then takes my money.

Yes, Hansen had them scoring because he fits well with the Twins. How come Hansen hadnt scored more than 16 goals in a season before playing with them? He cant carry a line, but he compliments them well

My point with Jagr was that in 2011 he had 54 points in 73 games, awfully similar to Henrik's 55 points in 74 games. Or when Jagr put up 29 points in 57 games, pretty similar to Henrik's current 26 points in 43 games. I am not saying they are the same, but that the Sedins are two seasons from 70+ seasons, could rebound just as Jagr did with the right mix of linemates and protection in the roster.

EDIT: the big difference is that Jagr got to play with Huberdeau and Barkov last year, while the Sedins are often together. Splitting them up might be the way to extend their careers and protect them from being burnt by the new speedy kids

They are cemented in terms that it the power is completely in the hands of the player and not the GM... They are NOT cemented in the fact that they can be waived under the player's right to waive, NOT the GM. You are basically saying that NTC and NMC are essentially useless as a GM still holds the right to force a player to waive even though they signed it...

and Naïve? Its the law? Its a legally bound contract that he signed. You are saying that Benning can sit down all of his players who has NTC's or limited... Rip off the C's and A's from the jerseys while they sit infront of them, say to them "I am going to need you to sign this sheet saying you waive your right to stay with this team" and look for options for trade? Essentially in a nut shell?

I'll give u an example...

At the local beer n wine i asked if their prices were competitive with the Provincial Liquir stores out of curiosity. FYI they pay the same as them.
They said they match them & they do not advertise that either.
Summary: business will take your money if u don't ask otherwise.

you are comparing price matching at a cold beer and wine store (provincially owned vs private) to a legally binding contract signed by players vs management....
