I wonder how many more goals Ovi would have scored had he played in the era that Gretzky did where the game was much more open.
He had a 50 50 season in 2005-2006 when the game was as wide open as it has been in at least two decades and I can only imagine what his numbers would have looked like by now had the game continued to be wide open like that one season. - kingcong39
And how many fewer goals would he have if they didn't call obstruction penalties, had to deal with the 2-line pass, and used a 1-piece wooden stick? |

Once the NHL fixes their scoring problems with these bowed net concept designs, everything will be fine....

I saw an article that compared Crosby and Gretzky over a combination of measurements. It was something like their ppg averages compared to their peers, with relationship to the league average of GPG.
I believe it actually worked out to be a lot closer than most would like to think. Gretzky still had the nod, but Crosby was get a fraction behind him.
When I get a second I will try to locate it... |

I've talked with people in the Pens blog about Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr is today's game.
Most agreed that their raw totals would be lower, but that they would still be the best point producers in the game.
As much as the fanbase hates Crosby, can anyone here legitimately say that he's not one of the top 10 forwards to ever play the game? |

He is definitely in that conversation. And personally I would say yes.

So, was looking at Ovechkin's goals. He's 31, and has 544 goals. If he stays healthy, let's say his goal scoring production declines by 5% every year and his production continues for this year and see how his totals look at the end of each season:
2017: 38 (582)
2018: 36 (618)
2019: 34 (652)
2020: 32 (684)
2021: 30 (714)
2022: 28 (742)
2023: 26 (768)
2024: 24 (792)
2025: 22 (814)
This would make him 39 and puts him second all-time to Gretzky. Do you think the numbers are realistic? - jmatchett383
Yes, I do think it's realistic. |

Another thing that jumped out (other than the fact that this list of names looks like my hockey card collection from that year): Only one 'Merican born player on this list.

On an unrelated note, I was completely unaware that Brian Propp had suffered a stroke. There was/is an article written on Philly.com yesterday by Bob Ford about his recovery etc which was a good read.
And yes, I'm too lazy to find the link. |

I don't like the way 87 carried himself on the ice for the first half + of his career but even I begrudgingly have to say if not top ten all time, he's awfully close.
Ps i still have super Mario #1. |

If Crosby up and retired today, I'd say no. Here's my list based on that (incredibly unrealistic) premise:
1.) Gretzky
2.) Howe
3.) Messier
4.) Mario
5.) Sakic
6.) Espo
7.) Jagr
8.) Trottier
9.) Kurri
10.) Brett Hull
Crosby is only 29 and if he just has a couple more average years (average by his standards), he's cracking this list IMO.

Other question: Jagr has 756 goals and missed 3 NHL seasons (not counting lockputs) to play in the KHL. Taking an average of his goals totals for the 3 seasons before and after those seasons (not a moving average), and normalizing for an 82 (in his case, 76.875) game season in 12/13, he averages 29.8 goals/season, giving him basically an extra 90 goals for 846. |

Talking about point totals for players who have yet to retire is another reason why lockouts and lost seasons suck. |
