I think some of the pieces don't fit together during even strength, with respect to the bottom 6. What do you do with Brayden Schenn, for example? What is he? Does he help the bottom 6? He gets paid $5 million dollars per year and we're not even sure if he's that good.

But I definitely don't think the bottom 6 are the biggest problems the Flyers have.

The biggest problems the Flyers have, IMO, are consistency on the blue line and they are missing another Top 6 forward.

Schenn is a tough guy to get a read on. He was a warm body for very long stretches, and then dynamite during his hot streaks. Last season he finally showed he could contribute in a positive way, even when the points were not coming.

He's gone right back to his old ways this year. I am not so sure its even that he needs a skilled center to play with, because he's had ample tries with G in his career. In the right deal, I do think I would explore moving Schenn.

Flyers need to figure out a way to get another quality center into the mix. Thats issue #1 for me with the forwards. I'd also like to see a Gaustad (in his prime) added to the mix, which is what I kind of hoped Weise would bring. Seems not.

Weise hasnt been good. He has been given pretty much every chance to succeed, and has been an utter flop.

I was excited to see what he could bring. He is the same guy who was a healthy scratch for the Hawks last year...

Since right before Christmas last season (82 games) he has 5 goals and 4 assists....

I realise he's being paid to produce but he's been playing the right way for a while now in my eyes. He's been a good fit with Schenn and Simmonds so far. If you're wondering who set Schenn up point blank last night, it was him.

I'm not rooting against Brayden Schenn. I just don't think he'll ever be other than what he is today.

That's kinda who Dale Weise is, though. Get a look at his career numbers.

He's a bottom 6 guy. He had those two years in MTL where he did well, but he hasn't gotten back to that level since. IDK who he played with in MTL, but I suspect he probably played on a line a bit above what he's been doing here.

Right, like signing free agents Boyd Gordon and Dale Weise
- aantny88

I was thinking more about adding some high priced top free agents.

He was wonderful to watch down the stretch run last year.

I hope so. He seems to find his game whenever he gets to the AHL. Looks a little suspect defensively when up on the big club, but he also needs a chance to prove himself instead of 7minutes a game, and to work through his issues.

Laughton has had kind of a funny usage. He hasnt had a line to play on, but instead has been all over the place. Berube used him on the wing on the top line at one point.. and then back down with 4th liners.. Young players need some sort of consistency to get comfortable in the NHL. Im not saying to coddle them, but throwing something new at them and asking them to do 15 different things isnt the best way for them to develop.

I remember the play. Im not saying he is incapable of playing hockey, I just think a guy who has 9 points in a season shouldnt be playing in the top 6...

He is a 4th liner who has a season and a half of over performance.

That's the problem with Wiese. A 3rd line player has to produce some offense and generate some scoring chances somewhat consistently. The rest of his game has been fine, but his offense has been pretty much non existent. Without the offense, he is a 4th line level player.

Poor Weise could have had two assists this weekend if Schultz and Schenn could have finished one on one with the goalie.

EDM was reported to be looking for a puck moving dman who can play the point and a solid back up goalie who has been a starter... what could Streit (retained salary if needed) + Neuvy get us from EDM?

I would like to see him a little hungrier on the forcheck as well, but going forward, as a 4th liner he would be fine.

Still think it was a poor signing...

$2.35 mill a season for 4 years, at 10 point per season pace is an abysmal signing to say the least.

Nope this year. Read the Oilers are thinking about waiving Gustavsson and that they want a solid back up to help Talbot out. Defense is just a repeated hole.

To paraphrase something Tomahawk said about Schenn a while back that stuck with me, 'He'll be a player that will get to 600 points, but you'll never realize it.'

I just think that is what he is at this point. Some seasons you'll be able to notice him better than others, and it's annoying because we all know when he's on his game he is a real impact player. I really would like to see him with Couts this year at some point.

Pens blogger saying they are in on Landskog? Who knows if it is true but you would have to believe a Dman coming back to Avs is something they would want in any deal for Landeskog.
That is the type of player the Flyers need. But I am sure negotiations would start with Ghost

value wise i don't think you're off at all. i just have reservations. it's not as if his contract is bad, but its not cheap. maatta has been down lately, but he does fill a need.

P.S., how the (frank) are ya stranger its been a while
