did he actually say petersen is leaving this year? i dont think he was specific just saying in general
- Sabresfan-365

No. He was guessing that he might leave. His phrase was "Will it be in Buffalo? Maybe."

If Cal Petersen decides to leave school after his junior year, the only team he can sign with is Buffalo until August 15, 2018. Per CBA they own his rights until after his 4th year of college. He's a Junior now. He would become a UFA after 8/15/18. I just read through it and have been chatting on a Sabres site about this very issue. Kris Baker isn't correct.

He was drafted in 2013, so 4 years would be 2017. Are you just assuming the year because of the junior comment?

they'd come off looking so bad. The ncaa players choose not to sign an elc which is their right and then continue pursuing an education of some sort. Now the league should put some sort of ultimatum on that?

The PR nightmare from that isnt worth changing the rule on the occasional vesey or schultz.

- Sabresfan-365

sorry , players come across looking bad by becoming a free agent after completing their college

any other sport, you need to sit out a year and are redrafted

why should hockey be any different?

they don't like it, go play in the khl and hope the check doesn't bounce

how does a player look bad by completing school and exercising his right to choose where he wants to work?

If you took the option away you'd look like a Richard and for what? the fasching's of the world?

And baseball allows a similar process, the kids choose not to sign with the team they're taken in the draft by and head right back to school until they are ready to sign.

In the case of baseball college athletes are obviously allowed to stay and be redrafted but they too get up to their senior year.

Yes he probably is and his brain shut off for a moment.

I like Baker. He really follows the prospects closely and I do value his opinion on the kids. I might disagree sometimes but he's good to follow.

since nhl drafted players have an option to go to college, they should have to sit out that year after school before they sign wherever you want

it's simple, not sure why they should be treated any better than athletes of the other sports

(I don't know) is the college rule only if they go all 4 years? Like in his case leaving early, is that an exception of that rule, forcing sabres hand?

The league will come off looking incredibly bad if they attempt to punish these players for making them go the NCAA route. All anyone will see is a league of billionaires punishing kids for pursuing an education. We all know why they're really doing it but thats not how the headline will read. And i ask again is it really worth doing for the Fasching's of the world?

The CBA states that players that were drafted (high school or USHL players) and entered college by the following June 1, the team that drafts them retain their rights through the graduation of his college class.

good god

if player x is drafted by the bills, and does not want to sign with the bills, he must sit out a year

if player y is drafted by the cleveland indians and does not want to sign with them, he must sit out a year

if player z is drafted by the knicks and does not want to sign with them he must sit out a year

just because an 18 year old wants to go to college, and can't sign while he is in school, he should have to sit out a year once he is done with school if he does not want to sign with the team that drafts him

No, he doesn't. he goes back to school.

Actually same with basketball although in that case with the draft being so small you're way better off signing as soon as you're drafted.

So as a player would a loophole be available to you if you pursued a degree that was say 2 years?

Maybe GMTM trades Lehner at the deadline for a winger or d-man, calls up Ullmark to backup Nilsson then signs Cal Petersen to his ELC in March and starts in Rochester ?
