Exciting rumour for sure, but I can't see the Leafs preferring to keep JVR over Kadri. A winger vs a 2-way centre is no contest. I don't even know if the Leafs even really need Shattenkirk. Their pairing of Gardiner / Carrick is - I read yesterday - in the top five pairings for driving offense. (I'll try to find that Tweet).

The Reilly / Zaitsev pairing is also good. Obviously Shattenkirk is a nice player, but the Leafs really need to upgrade on the back of the back-end because Polak and Hunwick are brutal.

As for the scout that thinks kadri is just getting it going this year.......it's hard to think someone who follows the NHL closely would think such a thing.

Not hard to see why the Leafs would flip JVR for a D and then bring up Kapanen, but I can't see them trading their best defensive centre, because while Matthews is decent defensively,you don't want to use him as a shut-down guy and Nylander and Bozak certainly aren't good at defense in the slightest.

I don't get the Doan or Iginla hype, while the Habs need help up front badly, the RW position should be the least of their concern with Radulov and Gallagher. However, on the left wing or at the center position, it's a whole different story.

I'd take JvR or Kadri for Shatty in a heartbeat. Sign and Trade is definitely going to have to happen though.

The Leafs aren't trading one of their few good and experienced players for a soon to be free agent D man who is neither big or fundamentally sound defensively. They already have those type of players on the roster

why would Habs pick p a UFA Shattenkirk? To do so they would have to create a huge hole or give up a Sergachev and a 1st. And then what? and we wouldn't be able to resign him anyways.
