Food for thought. Ovechkin has never gone 7 games without scoring a goal. He's gone 6 without, tied for his longest goalless drought. Tonight is game 7.

Salary cap would be tight however it is workable.

Which is why the cheap ELC players are that much more important.

Kane, Moulson and Ennis would all have to be gone for sure

- Stripes77

A bunch will be and some coming up in 2 years . So have to look at it that way. Could be workable .

Here is the big issue trading for JT.

Okposo, ROR, JT, Risto and soon to be Eichel will all be loaded up on expensive contracts.

JT's new contract would be around $9 million per easily.

Then throw in losing Reinhart and Nylander both of whom combined would be making around $5-6million with Nylander being on his ELC for 3 seasons when he makes it to the NHL (thank you slide rule)

Then throw in a 1st round draft pick and a 2nd as what was suggested you don't pick until the 3rd round.

We already know the cupboard is pretty bare at the moment, and with the lack of depth this team has up front in the bottom 6 and in the back on the bottom 4 that is just something that could completely handcuff them to being able to get over that hump (I am talking Cup winning)

Almost every single Cup winner has good production from players on their ELC's or on the cheap.

The Sabres won't have any ammo to get said players in trades, and won't have any ammo to draft said players.

This isn't a UFA signing where it only costs salary space, this would cost salary space a very good young player, at least one very good prospect and several draft choices.

I would pass on trading for JT not because he isn't worth it, but because it would cripple the Sabres long term. They would always be that very good team that can't win it all. Call them the new Washington Capitals...

- Stripes77

It get what you're saying and I think you have a very valid point but I think it could work.

First, If the JT trade was today, we would still have a 2nd round pick since we have two. Cap wise, JT's new contract would kick in 2018-19 season and let's say he does get 9 million per year. And, also lets say Eichel gets bumped to 8 million per. So, that leaves us at: JT, RoR, Okpo, Eichel, Risto = 26.9 million committed for the 2018 season and that's not bad for your core. Moulson and Ennis will still be here for that season at 5 and 4.5 million, but I think one if not both will be gone by then.

IF the cap is lets say 72 -75 million for 2018, I'm not seeing how we don't have enough to pay the rest of our guys who will make a lot less. But, I do have to admit, I don't follow cap issues as much as others do, so I might be looking at things from an ignorant standpoint.

Just saw the Price video. Raining kidney shots on Palmieri. Probably should've been a major, but they go easy on goalies even when it's probably warranted. Emery didn't get a match penalty when he almost killed Holtby. Neither did he get suspended.

My issue isn't really how much of the cap the big guys would eat up.

It's the losing 2 very good promising players Reinhart and Nylander on cheap contracts and then not having much in the pipeline for players to step in when the Gionta's of the world aren't on the roster.

Salary cap sure it will work, the assets giving up are a huge issue for me.

The lines would be a mess.

Moulson JT Okposo
Kane Eichel Girgensons?
Carrier ROR Gionta
Foligno Larsson Delo

Moulson would have to be on the top line
There is a hole in the top 6 RW. Girgensons would have to slot in there if you move ROR to center and we all know that doesn't work.

Baptiste, Bailey and Carrier are not ready for top 6 minutes.

You could move ROR to the wing

Moulson JT Okposo
Kane Eichel ROR
Foligno Larsson Gionta
Carrier Girgensons Delo

but that still leaves Moulson playing top 6 minutes...

Would be a tough movement . Stil would like to sign him as a ufa vs losing Sam and Alex. Might entice him to stay and Islander till he becomes a UFA. Hockey gods would be giving us a Ark.

Think of the lines with Sam and Alex...

ROR JT Okposo
Nylander Eichel Reinhart
Carrier Larsson Foligno
Baptiste Girgensons Bailey

Or if somehow Kane is still here

Nylander JT Okposo
Kane Eichel Reinhart
Foligno ROR Carrier
Baptiste/Bailey Larsson Girgensons

Okay, gotcha position on the matter. And, I agree without a doubt ROR moves to wing, he has to stay in the top 6. I was looking at a roster more like this:

Kane-Eichel-ROR
Moulson-JT- Okposo
Ennis as extra top 6
Foligno-Larsson-Gionta
Carrier-Girgs-Fash

Add in Bailey, Bap, D-lo, and the rest of the prospects when needed.

Sure, agreed. Signing JT as a UFA is definitely the way to go, but we don't really have a stellar record of landing the real big fish. I think his UFA signing would probably put him at 10-11 million per, too. But if keeping Nylander and Sam only costs us an extra 1-2million on JT's contract, than do it all day.

I hear ya I just don't think Moulson and Ennis are good enough to be in the top 6.

It's not something I really want to entertain anymore ya know?

Reinhart Nylander Bailey and a first IMO...

He is worth it for sure but it would destroy any sort of young depth and cheap contracts the Sabres would have.

I would entertain Reinhart and Bailey as starting points as long as the + wasn't Nylander and a 1st but I don't think that's enough to get it done.

Reinhart Bailey and a 1st I could handle if it keeps Nylander here...
