Steep is all relative, but the important thing to remember is point production...there is a trend that point production goes down, but it doesnt mean they become useless

Why play hockey if you can't produce more points than the other team? Can you give me an example of players who's production disappeared, but they were still effective players?

No team should ever pay a player over 28. They all suck.

That used to be the logic of everyone on the Pens board... "he's too old, don't sign him, let the young guns play, blah blah blah."

Now it is overextend/overpay the shiny new toys even though they are fairly replaceable.

That's the point there. Every year all we ever hear around the TDL is that teams are looking for D help. It's not like there's a ton of viable "replacement level" players that are being blocked by aging vets with a big contracts.

Fact is, there aren't enough good NHL defensman and teams need to be diligent in finding talent anyway they can. If someone want's to give Schultz a 4 or 5 year deal for 4+ mil, I let him walk. If the Pens can keep him for 3x3, I think pretty hard about giving him that deal 'cause we don't have a ton of D waiting in the wings that's ready for playoff hockey.

Looking at aging charts I also think you have to look at a players character and drive. 27+ is UFA years which means a lot of guys have just signed their big contract and are unlikely to be signing another deal until 32+. Motivation to hit the gym as hard would likely decline as the guys already paid. I think theres a reason why certain players have performed extremely well later into career... many are workout warriors.

I'd be interested in seeing analytics for age 28 between guys who were UFA at 27 and guys who signed a RFA deal that took them to 29. I bet the latter group that is more likely to see another big contract are outperforming.

I had no idea Penguins were carnivores. We feasted on the Panthers like I feast on all you can eat rib night!

Oh, haha I was thinking that they're only carnivores. (apparently beyond fish and stuff they can also eat squid - did not think that)

Players that don't produce points are bad.

I've been to the calgary zoo, pretty well managed compared to the edmonton one. I hear they still have an elephant living in that zoo that george laraque was trying to free.

It has a lot to do with the time that guys start getting married and having kids

Hockey is no longer the #1 priority and the extra time that guys put in usually falls by the wayside

It's amazing how advanced stats have simply given "analysts" more data to draw from, which can be used to support basically any argument.

Olli Maatta is disparaged because of his shot attempt +/-, but meanwhile is 3rd on the team among defensemen in goals for percentage (64.9), well ahead of Dumoulin and even Letang. He's been on the ice for far more goals for than goals against, despite being on the ice for more shots against than for.

Which is more important?

How did Spiegals best C in the NHL go?

I realise he had an assist, but is he progressing?
