But they're better now, obviously

Alan Hull ‏@alanhull
In Hall’s career Oilers were +7 in goal differential w/ Hall on the ice and -222 with him off, but it was his fault they couldn’t win.

(The above refers to all situations)

Health is his only issue.

This does make me worry about the Leafs though. The cost for a young RHD is insane right now. The Leafs need someone better than Larsson too. Better hope they draft one..

Drafting is the only way. Which means we may still be 5 years away from competing

Yeah, Hall plays a fairly reckless game and has been injured more than once because of it.

That said, I'm sure beforehand that they could have dangled out Hall to more teams and gotten a return much better than Larsson...

I'm not sure a ton of other teams had what Edmonton wanted though. Larsson is young, has lots of potential, is on a pretty cheap contract, and is right handed.

I can't see the Jets saying no to a Hall vs Trouba trade for instance. Especially with him asking for trade/holding out.

And Trouba is better than Larsson, no question.

As for the Leafs and D help next year:

Dermott/Nielsen in, Hunlak out. The latter is a zone exit trainwreck; of the two, only Polak brings anything useful, and that physicality is good at breaking cycles, but they get hemmed in alot, so it's kind of moot.

Shattenkirk's a long shot, but there's also another year of Rielly and Zaitsev maturing; Rielly is only 22.

If by takes pride you mean uses it as his primary pickup line when drinking at gritty dive bars, then probably

On a side note, looks like brent retired from hockey to follow his dream of being an OPP officer

I'm not even sure which group you're trying to put down here. Both would be acceptable.

I think Trouba is, just my opinion.....and I also see a bit of Mario in Laine, specifically the shot and his ability to do crazy things standing still in terms of shooting and making plays. He's nowhere near the passer Mario was though, probably why he's a winger and not a centre.

In my opinion, yes.

He's reliable, more physical, a better skater....

And I still think there is some offensive potential somewhere in there.

Folks tend to lump Dermott and Nielsen together, but Nielsen is further ahead at this point I think. Mostly because Dermott has only played 9 games for the Marlies, not sure why. I doubt with that kind of action, he is going to be ready to rock by next year.
