Here are some of the quotes

Auston Matthews is destined to anchor a franchise. Patrik Laine will lift one.

Matthews is a franchise centre to build around. Laine is a virtuoso capable of hitting notes we don’t yet know exist.

To this point, Laine has shown he can elevate to a place Matthews may not be able to reach. Matthews has been a four-star player – literally with a historic four-goal debut and metaphorically – but Laine has shown us moments of five-star excellence. There’s no reason to believe we won’t consistently be awed by Laine’s abilities and achievements. Matthews can do a lot. Laine can do more.

I'd take Mario for goals over Ovechkin. Mario also shot at high shooting percentage like Laine.

though I do recognize that Ovechkin's adjusted are higher than Marios.....Mario pre-comback would be higher.

i.e. Mario from 84-97 ranks higher than Ovechkin.

- mykokes

hard to compare 80s and 90s to today. the goalies in the 80s were awful

Just looked at Mario.. did not realize he had a 19% ..that nuts he was amazing

Another issue with Laine is the shot distance.. he is scoring them from crazy far away so far.

Still take the center.
Hull for four seasons was wowing everyone with his ridiculous goal amounts, and I'm sure during those 4 seasons he was a 5 star player. Sakic though did it for the long haul.

20 years later, who would you want...Hull or Sakic? Hull did more based on the above criteria, but who would more hockey people pick?

I think it's way to early to say that. Especially considering he fell to 4 and there was no way they weren't picking him. I do see the "might" in your post, but just playing devil's advocate.
- RickJames77

Oh for sure. He's got a few years to look as good or not better than those two.

But he's an oil. He's bound to suck and be a 4th liner "untouchable".

You're right, but consider that Mario missed like 5 years....and came back and still was among the best for a season, in an era more similar to today's hockey. Even post lockout, at the age of 41 he was still near a ppg.

Also I have to admit, it was a hockey roundtable on the TSN that the name Mario was brought up in comparison with Laine.....more or less, Laine plays like Mario but at the winger position. The way he can get his shot off any which way. The passing isn't at Mario's level, but the shot is.

We only laugh because the Leafs were you a few years ago. We don't want you to make the same mistakes!
