Hall/Larsson trade being thought of as awful. That's a joke. On paper it is bad, but the Oilers have went from a bottom dweller to contending for their division, and this trade is a big part of it. I liked Hall as an Oiler, but they got a solid defenseman who is not injury prone like Hall. Larsson adds dimensions the Oilers were lacking and if you cannot connect the dots between this move and their improvements you should probably stop writing about hockey. Chiarelli has built a contender before and appears to be doing the same in Edmonton, which is way more than can be said for Toronto.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall the Leafs drafting first overall for half a decade and still sucking.

And as far as rebuilds go, I think the Leafs are doing just fine.

Did you hit your head prior to posting this here? ie. why do we care about the oilers?

Leafs should finish bottom 12-14
And should do what Florida did to get Ekblad. Draft!!
Marner will be tremendous for years to come. Sell the farm for Ekblad and how do you replace marners 10 year potential?

I thought it was just about what ifs....I'm pleased with Marner, and accept the fact Ekblad is a Panther...until he's ufa.

Ekblad + Barkov for Gardiner (top-5 defender in the game) + Kadri (Selke winning player with 60 expected goals)

Why blame anyone? Guy doesn't live up to his contract or potential he gets cut. It's like that in all walks of life.
- mykokes

His agent got paid to negotiate a contract that ensured cowen got paid max value and protected cowen’s interests.

His agent failed at doing that imo. So I think he is to blame him. As much as cowen is to blame for his poor play.

The leafs/sens are not the bad guys here. The are looking to win hockey games in a cap-constrained system. players that aren’t contributing to winning relative to their caphit should have some fear of losing their contract.

I'm pretty sure it goes beyond the contract the agent negotiated, pretty sure its a CBA thing, and a lot of players actually have contracts like Cowens. ie. didn't hodgson have the same thing happen to him....buffalo buying him out? Sam Gagner in Arizona?

I think it's to do with their age, they only get one third if they are under a certain age.

they back-loaded the contract.

that made if extremely friendly to buyout both from a caphit and financial perspective.

They should have negotiated more money up-front, even it meant less money overall.

I expect we don't see many contracts negotiated that allow for a similar buyout result.

A forward (JVR or Bozak along with prospects) will be traded for D.
It has to occur.

- Fakepartofme

Why? Right now we poised to lose Marincin or Leivo in the expansion draft and have a chance to sign Shattenkirk in the off season. Even with a top 4 RHD added to our roster we are not a contender and are in no hurry this season.

If we trade JVR+++ for a young potential top 2 RHD then we have to expose Carrick or Brown and weaken our top 6 forwards. I don't want to have our rookies over stressed about performing well without support as dumping JVR means dressing Holland or Michalek. It isn't good enough anyway so why hurry.

Stand pat, get a better pick and potentially get that defenseman we need WITHOUT losing a forward. Worse case we are in the playoff race then it won't be hard to move Corrado and a 2nd and 3rd for a rental like Wideman.

The arbitrator ruled there was no evidence Cowen was unfit when the Maple Leafs bought him out.
