not exactly what this case was actually about, but if an employee suffers a career ending type injury while performing work related tasks, then they should get compensation accordingly.

He will still get paid something like 1 million for the next year. That's a lot of compensation for doing a whole lot of nothing.

Plus. I think him not being an NHL player anymore is a lot to do with his ability. He wasn't good before his injury either.

He still loses $3 million that he expected to come his way. Good chance he never gets that the rest of his career combined.
- BINGO!

Meh, after taxes it's only a cool 1.5..

he's also made ~$10M during his career.

i can't say i feel sorry for him.

if he didn't suck, he would never have been bought-out. This is all on him.

And no under 35 contracts are fully guaranteed. So no player signing an under 35 contract should expect to be paid their full contract value if they are not performing.

so they were able to pay him off at 2/3 of his remaining salary?

I didn't follow the Sens and his career that closely but I was under the impression that his level of play most deteriorated with the onset of his hip problems. Either way, I think there should be a change to rules where a team is able to buyout injured players, but the % of the money they need to payout is higher than a normal buyout situation. or something like that.

Meh. I sympathize.

Guy loses out on $1.5 mill in actual money, and the team that traded for his piece of poop contract get out of it for a fraction.

I would like to see it added to the CBA that you can't buy-out a contract that you acquire via trade for at least one full calendar year.

Why? Thats the conditions of the CBA, buyouts are better than pure releases (see NFL).

I don’t think more rules are necessary. Going to make trades even harder.

If anyone is to blame, cowen should blame his agent for negotiating a contract with such a team friendly buyout. players need to hold their agents accountable too.

Why blame anyone? Guy doesn't live up to his contract or potential he gets cut. It's like that in all walks of life.

Marner is a phenom, but Ekblad has the potential to be a top D in the league... every team needs that.

Hall/Larsson trade being thought of as awful. That's a joke. On paper it is bad, but the Oilers have went from a bottom dweller to contending for their division, and this trade is a big part of it. I liked Hall as an Oiler, but they got a solid defenseman who is not injury prone like Hall. Larsson adds dimensions the Oilers were lacking and if you cannot connect the dots between this move and their improvements you should probably stop writing about hockey. Chiarelli has built a contender before and appears to be doing the same in Edmonton, which is way more than can be said for Toronto.

Leafs should finish bottom 12-14
And should do what Florida did to get Ekblad. Draft!!
Marner will be tremendous for years to come. Sell the farm for Ekblad and how do you replace marners 10 year potential?
