honestly like any stat it becomes more meaningful the larger the sample size. sort like of how matthews hasn't scored 96 goals after 24 games even though he was on pace for it after 1 game.

corsi does do a decent job at showing possession, it just doesn't account for linemates, opponents, or zone starts so on its own it's not a flawless tool for comparing players. i think people have a problem with it just because it's sometimes used out of context.

I'm not trying to discredit your CF stats but I find a flaw in anything that tells me Hyman is better than Mariner.

The thing I think is lame about Corsi and Fenwick is their stupid names. It's variations on shot differential. Of course more shots and shot attempts is usually good. But you give it some name that has to be explained, because the name itself is meaningless, people think it's some mysterious divining spell or some poop. Any time people start giving names to things that already have names, there's a bullpoop factor in there somewhere.

The bolded part is my biggest problem. Tanner is bad for that.

Hockey stats such as corsi are good tools, but cannot be looked at by themselves alone to determine how good a player is. Use them in combination with other information or use them to determine when someone deserves a better look to see if you've had an incorrect impression of them.
