Sheary butchers a lot of plays. If he could handle half of the chances given to him by Sid, he'd probably have 20 goals by now.

Before anybody gets their panties in a bunch, I don't hate him. I just don't think he's a first line player.

Give Jake a shot.

Highly doubt that. He was at 837 after getting pulled. his season stats are 2.20g 930sv%

He struggles with consistency. Some games he looks stellar and others he can barely handle the puck. I'd like to see Jake get a look there or get a more extended look with Wilson... I'd even put Kunitz there from time to time.

If Crosby had a true sniper on LW it almost wouldn't be fair the way he's playing now. He's setting guys up and they're not capable of handling it. They simply aren't expecting to get the puck because nobody else is seeing the ice like him. It's amazing and frustrating at the same time.

I third this. To me, Sheary and Rust have 3rd liner written all over them. Set Crosby's wingers as Guentzel / Hornqvist and Malkin's as Kunitz / Kessel and be done with it. The sooner the better so they can develop some chemistry. I like Sheary, too, and he has played well, but just about everyone looks good on Crosby's wing.

Edit: Currently a logjam at LW, so I would bump Sheary down to the 4th line so that Hagelin plays on the third line.

We got a brief glimpse of what it'd be like when Hoss was here. It'd be nice to see again before he retires. Maybe Sprong will be that guy next year.

I think Sheary has done more to deserve 3rd line minutes.

I don't remember that at all. I remember being ridiculed on this site for suggesting He be a trade deadline target a month before the deadline last year though.

I'm not touching the first line. Sheary has been more than acceptable inf that role. Kunitz, for the time being, is better off in a bottom 6 role although I wish they would install Kessel back on the third line just to even out the elite scoring to 3 lines, even if they move Bonino and puck up someone like Hanzal who has a very affordable cap hit and might be just enough of a shake up to make this team unbeatable again.

Well, it should be between him and Guentzel because I think Malkin's line needs a Kunitz type to balance out having Kessel on the other wing.

Sheary has played well and I like him, but I also see him flub shots and fall down a lot to the point where I wouldn't want to rely on him to cash in when games get tighter and scoring chances become fewer. Everything I've seen from Guentzel tells me he has a nose for the goal and the skill to put the puck in the back of the net.

Who would you put on Malkin's wings? He should have more than misfit scraps.

I wasn't disagreeing, just saying right now Hagelin is not putting anything in the net.

Hagelin has never been a scorer and never will be. He has never scored more than 17 goals in a season and that is playing on elite Rangers and Penguins teams. I think he has to play on the 3rd line. The top 6 would waste Crosby's and Malkin's talents and the 4th line would waste his talents. Crosby needs a Hornqvist type and so does Malkin in Kunitz. But they both need legit goal scorers, too. I think HBR could be a thing. Hagelin and Rust on a breakout? Forget about it. Scoring might suffer, but I think they could retrieve pucks like no other, eat up possession, and hound the opposition relentlessly on defense.

Crosby-horny and Malkin-kessel. Keep those duos together and find which 3rd guy compliments them best. The defense has really been worrying me this year

Teams are getting behind our D several times a game. It's alarming how often it's happening. The give up more odd-breaks and breakaways in one game than they did the entire playoffs last year.

I would love to see Guentzal get a look with Sid.

I agree with this. Crosby needs the best goal scorer remaining (which I think is Guentzel but it could be Sheary) and Malkin needs the best net-front presence / board battler / grinder remaining (which I think is Kunitz). The 3rd and 4th line centers are set, so I think filling out the line combos shouldn't be too hard or controversial. I think Hagelin should definitely play 3rd line LW. Rust should probably be the 3rd line RW. I know Guentzel has played center, but I don't know if he can play RW, same with Sheary. If either could play RW, I would give them the nod over Rust. If neither can or do it well, then there has to be an odd man out when the team is healthy. What a change from just a year+ ago!

As for the defense, I think we need to trade for a legit mid pairing ASAP. Fleury looks done, at least in Pittsburgh. Fehr is pretty useless. Get what you can for both, sooner than later, and find a trading partner for a legit defenseman, be it in the same trade or a different one. Then I would scratch whoever is playing the worst and just cycle scratches through a healthy defensive corps and play everyone if/when injuries arise.

Fleury & Fehr for Gio + 2nd. Elliot can go play in the minors & let Chaddy boy fight it out with Flower to the holy grail (only to be defeated by the rampaging Pens )!
