If there is a need to protect 4 dmen, then so be it. If there is a pawn to be sacrificed, it should come from the forward group; where we have the depth.

True, and they have to make two forwards signed for 2017-18, who have played 40 games this season in the NHL, or 70 over the last two seasons available, so there's that.

The Leafs gave permission to Montreal to talk to Mats Sundin but did they receive any compensation for him? I honestly don't recall but I don't think so (maybe the Habs would have had to if they successfully signed him...? Not sure).

Anyway, the point here is that the Leafs didn't trade Sundin when he had some value left. Had Mats waived his NTC they could have landed at least something significant for a guy they had no plans on resigning in the off-season. It made A LOT of sense to trade him at that point -- which is sort of, well, my point.

Depends on who the player is. GM's don't usually make this kind of deal since it puts their own job in jeopardy in the short term, and that's all they seem to care about.

Getting another defenseman who has to be protected during the expansion draft when they currently have to protect Rielly, Gardiner, and Carrick is an issue to, since a 4th one means they can protect two less forwards.
