I agree we have a weakness on D.
I disagree with trading a proven scorer with size to acquire help.
We have promising assets in Dermott/Neilsen/Valiev that may help solve the problem in a year or two.
I also trust that the management team can manage the cap issues, particularly with the expiring contracts of Laich, Michalek etc and get rid of second tier players like Bozak and Komarov, rather than a proven scorer.

It's because JVR will become untradable after he signs a new contract.

Because there are lots of proven 25-30 goal guys with size available?

Why is Kane or Toews untradeable? Getzlaf, Perry......the list goes on...well I should've pick 30 goal guys I guess, but you get the point...

JVR becomes untradeable if:

1. He signs a bloated contract that he is not worth now, or
2. He signs an eight year, bloated contract and the Leafs try to trade him at 35 yrs old coming of a 12g, 2a season.

If he signs a reasonable contract, he should be a tradeable asset for the next 3/4 years depending on $ amount and production any of the first 4 years.

Oh for FFS it was sarcasm..
They were going on a bout the new high priced contract, and I thought I was the slow one around here.

Can we afford to have 6-7 million going to a guy that will be, at best, a 2nd line winger? And also, a guy who - when the contract is all said and done - will be 35-36 years old?

Not too mention there's a bunch of ultra-talented free agents that are due to hit the market in the next few years -- John Tavares, Tyler Seguin, et al. Signing JVR may mitigate the possibility of landing top tier free agents. Especially when you consider that Marner, Nylander, and Matthews will be coming up for a significant raise during the course of whatever ridiculous deal JVR would need to be locked down with.

I actually wouldn't mind a healthy Lupul on Matthews wing.

Lupul, Matthews, Brown

Trade Sundin
Trade Kessel
Trade JVR

The solution to getting better is to trade away your best players.
Somehow, this makes sense to people.

Technically Sundin was never traded. Screwed us out of a few picks and or prospects. Just saying.

I said the same thing a few weeks ago.
A healthy productive Lupul would be perfect for Matthews.

But I know that doesnt exist.

A great moment in the history of hockey.

As a general rule, buying free agents doesn't work, with some exceptions
I don't see this management team going the quick fix route

His rights were traded for future considerations, and then we traded that dman prospect and a pick for Grabo.

Might have been connected, but even if it was, not even close to what he would have gotten at the deadline.

Nonetheless, he signed a contract with a no trade clause, and probably left money on the table to do so... there is no faulting him in not wanting to waive it.

To this day, I fail to understand his logic.

The only answer I have come up with "well moving my things to two different places in a few months is a (frank)ing hassle"

I don't disagree with you.

But I do fault him for claiming he wanted to finish his career in Toronto when it became obvious it wasn't the case.

First my Lawrie jersey is nothing, Now my EE Jersey is moot. Its going to be interesting seeing what this team can do next year. Not sure by adding Moreland and KM that they are going to be a divisional contender. may be plugging away at the WC again.
