Both are 10 to 15 range of the league in 5v5 score and venue adjusted CF%, SCF%, and xGF%

Neither are as good as they appear.

Feds91,

I took this last sentence you wrote to mean that you think both the CBJ and Montreal are playing over their heads and will fall to the bottom of the league by the end of the season (i.e. these stats are unsustainable in your opinion by the CBJ).

If the 2003-2004 CBJ were playing at that level I would agree with you. I think they are good enough to play at this level all year. That was the reason why i said what I said.

If I misunderstood your post I apologize.

The whole reason I look at the underlying data is that it provides information on the process itself and not the results. The process gives you a better idea of what the results should be over the long term.

Torts is a decent enough coach when you give him more tham a few games/season and he grinds down the soft. He is well on his way to the least important award in hockey. Too bad they will lose in the first round again.

Um the underlying data suggests they are in the upper half of the middle of the pack teams. Not sure what that has to do with 2003-04.

to use underlying data isn't truthful at this point in the season cause everyone plays a different schedule which CBJ has had the most difficult arguably so far.. so take CBJ, they've played dallas ,san jose, rangers, montreal and then another team whose played buffalo, carolina, vancouver, calgary and compare their underlying numbers.. which is one of many reasons why every analytics expert says you can't use analytics in small sample sizes.. which is exactly what you are doing..
