Although there's been a handful of great starting goalies in our franchise's history, his competition is actually pretty lame.

Parent, Peeters, Lindbergh, Hextall...

That's true but Mason's 920 save % as a Flyer would rank him top 10 of all NHL goaltenders in history. I realise that's not his actual career Save % and he had some bad years in Columbus but still nothing to sneeze at.

If he's the best goalie they've had in 20 years, yes he is better than Bob was as a Flyer, then that's not an asset I want to lose in the expansion draft.

I don't see him signing in Vegas anyhow. He's already been in Columbus.

GF% is a better measure because it doesn't include ENGs.

You also left out that fact that -17 has him second to last on the team, which is very bad for a player who gets easy minutes and limited ice time.

It also does not include SHG.

I'd debate that Cechmanek was better. He played in a much more favourable time to be a goaltender on perennial contending Flyers teams.

Mason has been tasked playing behind a team that's been rebuilding on the fly which has never had anything close to a solid defensive core. He's played a huge role in 2 playoff births and certainly can't be faulted for them missing in 2014-2015. All he did was post a 928 SV% and 2.25 GAA.

To me, it's less about being great/elite and more about having stability at the position. We've had far too many guys at that position for the last 15 years or so. So far, Mason has been here since 2013 and, aside from a few bad stretches that all goalies have, has been a top-10 goalie statistically for the bulk of that time. Now, if we could swap him for Carey Price, I'm all for it, and I hope our younger players can push him. But at the same time, it's nice to go into an offseason and have a sense of who the starter will be next year.

I don't disagree. I just don't give a contract until after expansion. If he's in such a big hurry to snap up the cash and roll his dice in Vegas then I'd let him go. Maybe he thinks they can get to a cup faster than the Flyers. I couldn't fault him, Tampa and Anaheim didn't wait for us to get another one.

Yeah, but neither did Washington, Winnipeg, San Jose, Florida, Atlanta, Columbus, Minnesota, Nashville, or Ottawa. 2/11 isn't great odds.

I agree about the contract. A handshake agreement would be nice. Negotiate upon a number and wait until after the draft to protect him.

So who will be the 4th PK forward with Read likely out for a bit?

Lyubimov and Laughton seem like the main candidates.

i'm very happy with mason. he struggled at the start of the season, but wasn't horrendous. he's come around, like most figured he would. overall, he's been consistent, top end player for us. i'd be happy to continue with him beyond this season.
