great effin post

interesting point about the monetary side of it.

- HB77

Thanks, however it's just a simple truth. If I were to say that one ethnicity that is prevalent where I live, are a bunch of lazy, rude, disrespectful, discourteous jack-asses, that would be an opinion. However, I do have some factual information that would support that claim (from personal experience) on a miniscule scale. I know that not all of them are this way. I have several friends of this ethnicity and are some of the best people I know. People constantly get opinion/belief confused for fact. Hell, half the reason most of us are in here is because of EK's opinion about trade rumors.

Legit post. I'm not being facetious when I say its posts like this that make me realize how truly uneducated I am. Gonna need to bone up on my reading material.

Also, I wouldn't undersell yourself. You regularly exemplify a degree of humility that's incredibly rare. Your willingness to not only recognize a deficiency but also act on it is something I value FAR more than almost any other trait. As the old adage goes, the first step to improving a weakness is recognizing that one exists in the first place!

Great! That means we're going to be stuck with that idiot Crapuano forever.

There is plenty of rational arguments to be made that certain organized monotheistic religions are currently more progressive/developed/moral than others (even if they are all bad apples or have been). Acting like we can't distinguish or differentiate between them on any sort of level is pure bullpoop, and is only even remotely possible under some premise of moral relativism which is apparently not an acceptable concept because you've already asserted "there are moral truths that are beyond debate." If these 'moral truths' are so far beyond debate then they should have no problem withstanding a robust analysis/debate.

There is also a rational argument to be made that people with gender identity disorder (or gender dysphoria) have a mental disorder/illness as opposed to a physical one. Just because the blanket statement 'trans people must have a mental illness' might not be correct, doesn't mean there aren't important finer intricacies to these issues that are entirely up for debate.

Similarly, another straw man argument, I don't think very many people would argue that "racism isnt a fundamental and intrinsic problem in america" but rather people argue about the causal agents creating this problem and who contributes in which ways and how all of these interactions create these problems that we all pretty much agree exist. There are plenty of aspects of that discourse that are entirely up for debate.

In fact most of these issues could use with some actual statistical perspective and less rhetoric from both sides. If you are immediately dismissing someone's opinion just because they don't agree with the underlying assumptions of your rhetoric (which may be very questionable) then you are the definition of closed-minded. People from both extremes of the political spectrum who are devoured by this type of rhetoric are contributing to this lack of functional discourse. This deep-seated rhetoric is often just as prevalent in academia as it is anywhere else in society. In fact, some academics arguably have more indoctrination to rhetoric than they do actual 'knowledge', an important distinction to make.

that's just it.
there was no finer points made about gender dysphoria. it was blanket statement.
they have no unassailable proof that theres any link to psychosis. some are quite confident it might begin at a hormonal imbalance at the fetus stage, but beyond that, potential psychosis is just hypothesis. id happily discuss some of the finer points to the best of my limited knowledge, with him if thats where he was going with it. but he wasnt.

in terms of religion, you dont get to say well this ones better except for those bad apples over there.
but that one has more bad apples. its a self serving point, intellectually dishonest and the defintion of semantics that skew the original point. a classic tactic though

and youre over arching retort shows through again concerning my point on racial attitudes. i never even attempted an implication of simple cause and effect.
but i certainly took issue with the fact that its only "liberal fags" who think black lives matter and the issue is blown far out of proportion.

its almost as if you think there was some sort of robust debate to be had in this instance. this is either naive or contempt for academia. i cant tell which

anyways, you made some solid points. im over it. i gotta study

heres the thing,
you believe your opinion is as good as my knowledge.
i hate this idea. its this thing thats been winding its way through democratic life for way too long. (isaac asimov)

yes, we live in a free country. you can say what you like. but your ignorance doesnt get rewarded with the same validity as my information does. and after you say your uninformed nonsense, i then get to call you out for its stupidity.
those on your "side" always profess to love freedom so much. it goes both ways.

theres nothing "healthy" about believing your religion is superior to others. theres nothing healthy about dogmatic brainwash from any side. theres no healthy debate when one guy is professing the things some imaginary guy did as proof his side is right. this is idiocy and lunacy. not healthy debate

i hate this sh1t.

then one get branded with some lameazz tired" liberal" label and the imaginary connotations that go with it in your head. or youre a commie that doesnt wanna work. or an entitled snob. or if you believe in some form of social justice, you must be like all the crazy overzealous ones.
you guys are fuking tools
.
anti intellectualism has to stop.

if you want healthy discourse, obtain more knowledge.

I just took the last sentence of one of ur posts and ran in a tangent with it. I didn't even read the other guys posts (instead I immediately dismissed them ) so forgive me for making you think what I was saying was in reference or defense of that poster/discussion.

I wouldn't say I have contempt for academia (as I am one) but instead I would say I might have contempt for those who want to bundle up everything that is learned at a University as authoritative knowledge. I just wanted to make the important distinction between 'knowledge' (I have a high standard for this) and intellectual/academic rhetoric (often conflated by many as knowledge).

Anyways, good luck with your studies.

Me neither. Which is why I try to stay away from forming strong/radical opinions about complicated social science issues (even though this can be very difficult in practice).

Tell Iggy to give me a sick job in the oil patch then.

Also, I can relate to the bold because I too am a skid who has experienced periods of degeneracy and thus am less inclined to judge the mental/physical circumstances of others. It's important to understand before rushing to judgement, and understanding is not always straight-forward.

Here's the thing I always go go back to, the question "why?".

People want to make all sorts of claims about social issues without truly asking the question. instead we get all the wrong answers.
" Because Muslims are beleifs are psychotic! Because Black People are lazy criminals! Because all the racists and homophobes turned up to vote! Because Notley!

I just think people are either stuck on the half truths that fir their narrative or too (frank)ing lazy to dig deeper towards the root causes.

People always want their conclusions to be more representative than they truly are so they can make some sort of 'insightful' sweeping generalization and feel accomplished. As you say, (frank)ing lazy.
