A lot of the more prevalent issues that are associated with PC are so controversial particularly because there is a major mismatch in discourse and simply saying all of the uneducated middle class needs a gender studies degree to participate in this discourse is exactly the problem. Academia has a major part to play in the formation of this intellectual exclusiveness and while academics might think it allows them to assume a position of relative authority in the discourse, nothing could be further from the truth. It in fact isolates them and their followers from the general populace of practical thought, and once in an isolation, academia/intellectualism can rampantly devolve into some of the monstrosities we see coming out of the liberal arts Universities in the news. Only those who have bought into the particular pseudo/social-science status-quo (be it in gender studies or sociology or whatever) will recognize this position of authority, and for the rest it carries no more weight than anyone else's opinion. Most importantly, it is not for you or anyone else to say whether someone choosing to buy into some of the finer aspects of this social academia are stupid or not.

My point being, I disagree with the sentiment that we should all be more educated in the liberal arts before discussing these issues. And being immediately dismissive/elitist of other's perspectives just because they don't buy into the same school of thought that you do does nothing to further the discourse. If anything people need more education on basic economics (e.g., cost/benefit analysis).
