Trading your leading scorer rarely works out. See Kessel, Phil and the NHL players on the roster we got in return.
Patience is the key. Would prefer to see how Dermott/Neilson develop before trading away a prime asset and then pay JVR what the market dictates. - Rang
Even if paying JVR what the market dictates means they can't afford to pay one of Marner/Nylander/Matthews?
And even though he is their leading scorer I don't think he is their best player, or has been their best player this year. Good player for sure, but that would be a lot of money tied up on forwards once everyone needs to be payed.
I think it would be better asset management to move him for a defenceman before he hits free agency.

I can see the logic, but I would rather see the likes of Bozak/Komarov/ moved to make cap room. Not because they are bad players, but because what they bring to the table is easier to replace than guys who have proven they can score.
Of course Greening/Michalek/Laich leaving next year will create some space as well.

It's kinda funny.. Nylander has been fantastic as a rookie but people act like his play has been just OK because leafs have Matthews Marner.. at this point for me it's a toss up between him and Marner and who's been better so far. Matthews has been the best. - ClarksonDavid
I would rank them tbis way:
Marner
Matthews
Nylander
But Lord almighty, I love that we are having this conversation. |

Agree with the ranking for now, Marner seems to work harder than the other guys or at least it appears that way and his hockey sense and vision are off the charts. |

Pretty awesome that their is an argument for everyone one of them being the best so far. all three have taken over games at different times. |

Agreed!
Matthews
Marner
Nylander
That's how I see it. Matthews controls the game a bit more, Marner is more flashy, and there are nights where Nylander is the best player on the ice.
Fun times right now for sure. |

Better than inside, though.
My dog is in the big dogpark in the sky, but I do recall that any and all dog problems between 10 pm and 8 am were exclusively my problems.
Thanks, Mrs. Wedgie. |

Marner / Matthews got to be close to a tie IMO

Yup, very much so. Mrs Lums also had a couple of Don Julio last night so the dowg could have been barking in her ear and she probably wouldn't have heard anything
But yes, outside is definitely better than in. And our pup does a good job of letting us know that (a) she needs attention, and (b) she needs it now. |

Idk it's all close. Nylander has been just as good and the whole all he's capable of doing is offense and is lost everywhere else is completely ridiculous . It's all pretty awesome tho |
