It makes a lot of sense. They are deep on the wing prospect wise. He'll be a free agent due for a substantial raise just as Marner, Nylander and Matthews need new deals. And he would theoretically bring back a good defenceman in a trade, which this team desperately needs.

I don't think anyone wants to give up JVR but he's an expiring asset that could bring a controllable one. He's going to be in for a big payday

i just think in two years the leafs will b very close to ready to make a real push. and his contract is up in two years. so move him instead of trying to fit his new contract under the limit with all those kids. hes a bargain now but after this contract id expect ladd type money at least.

history has proven that players rarely take deal in this age of hockey.... tavares is one of the only real exceptions that come to mind. even if he he take a modest increase to 6-7 which is still a little low for what he brings id still move him for a dman if a decent one comes up in trade. a gd prospect plus a decent pick or a solid dmen makes sense at this point imo

Winnipeg fans still seem to regret not sending Trouba out for him last year.. Edmonton fans seem to regret not doing Hall for Hamonic, that's something I guess?
