Like I said the only reason Mathews was picked over Laine was because he was a centre. For some reason people think you can only win if you draft the best center. That is the only reason he went 1st overall. Laine is a scoring machine. Goals win games.
- thundachunk

yes. Good Centers are hard to come by is why.
Mathews I felt was repeatedly the benefactor of others making the real plays. Kudos to him on that play in Game 1 for TO however. Real impressive.

Laine is extremely versatile, scores from everywhere. Truly a selanne / OV level player

I wonder if we would have picked laine instead of Mathews. JB usually picks based on his own views and not these ranking boards.

Would be nice to have that problem ... dam lotto

Toronto doesn't have a good center. Mathews is not bad but he is no Bo Horvat

Boy oh boy looks like we're in for a rough night. Unless they can hold on and we can play a really good 5 mins at the end and send it to OT

Not really - Matthews is also a more complete player, who had had an excellent year as an underage pro right after blowing apart the USNTDP. It's obvious that both players are exceptional, but both are very different; Laine is more along the lines of an Ovi (or perhaps a Stamkos) who is an absolute beast on the one-timer, while Matthews has the potential to develop into a guy like Bergeron/Kopitar/Thornton who can play solid defense while controlling the puck in the o-zone too, which is nothing to sneeze at at all.

Scoring is the hardest thing to do at the NHL level. He is a natural goal scorer. That is a rare thing.

Absolutely. That said, Matthews will create more goals for others, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Matthews score more overall points than Laine, though Laine will almost always lead him in goals.

Larsen = Death to anything resembling good hockey plays.. and it's not just him he makes look bad, everyone suffers because he's so nervy and weak with the puck.

- VIRTBOHUT

Agreed the guy is BRUTAL. Bring back Bartow ski. Better yet bring up Pedan.
