On good teams, 4th line players no longer have "no actual effect" on the game. 4th lines have become a vital part of championship teams over the last 8-10 years.
But in general I agree - we love our lunchbucket guys in T.O. - fifty__missions
We haven't had a good team for the last 8-10 years.
But it's always been this way in Toronto.
Komarov
Domi (although maybe he doesn't belong on this list, but for sure his popularity was disproportionate to his skill level)
Foligno (FFS, he jumped when he scored - which he did about once every 2 years by the time we got him)
Ken Baumgartner

Here's the only reason I would entertain trading for a d-man right now:
Are we holding back some kids who would benefit from more ice time if we traded JVR?
I think the answer is probably "no", but I think it's something that should be pondered.
Bobby Mac was on the radio this morning, and he was suggesting that there are a couple of NHL-ready forwards who are toiling away on the Marlies right now. - Atomic Wedgie
Then they are the ones that should be traded, somehow I don't think they are that ready.
Gotta keep the team they have now, try to upgrade with prospects and picks.

Sorry if the repetitiveness came off bumhole-ish, not my intention.
Anywho the rationale for me is the following:
- Leafs have pushed the draft and develop strategy as well as patience, which should still be the attitude going forward
- This team is likely not going to compete even with the addition of a young d-man right away
- Getting a d-man right now is more expensive than after deadline and playoffs start when the expansion picture becomes more clear
- D-man prices will go down as we start to figure out who gets exposed
- If we get a d-man now, chances are that Carrick (who in my mind is an NHL defenseman on many teams, and is also young and may increase in ability) gets picked up by Vegas for nothing in return
- We have some young guys that look good that could fill the spot in years to come - TheMussel
Not sure about the bolded.
The leafs are 1 point out of a wildcard spot... and had we had better D, may even have 2-3 pts extra....as defensive woes have cost us several games.
Now I know its still so early.
If andersen keeps playing like this...a battle for a playoff spot is not out of the question. ...and its better to have the kids battle for a playoff spot and maybe make the first round...then not.

I believe that when the CRTC demanded they switch from analog to digital, CBC did not convert all of their transmitters and then on Dec 31, 2012 stopped all analog transmission. The result is that outside of Toronto and Ottawa and some other areas, you can no longer get any CBC OTA signal. for example I live in London, and as far as I know, there is no OTA CBC signal available here. - vermie22

Good news:
Looks like you should be able to pull in OTA CBC in London:

This is why I consider the Leafs to be a bit of an anomaly in the sports world. Most of the time to inspire as much hatred that the Leafs do from other fan-bases the team is usually good.

It didn't work out for either team because neither team has won anything or even came close. I focus on team success more than individual stats when judging trades. - Ross77

I totally get it, though.
If I'm an Edmonite* or a Calgarian or Vancouverite, I'd be pissed if half the building was cheering for the Leafs.
Which, incidentally, is why Leafs/Habs games at the ACC are better than any other game. Way too many fans who left Montreal in the 1960s to 1980s and moved to Toronto, but kept cheering for the Habs (kinda hard to blame them for that).

I bet he was pissed.
What did he say? - Fakepartofme
Some team he didn't name called about Hamilton and gave them an insulting offer and then that team told other teams that they talked about Hamilton so apparently Hamilton is on the block. Also Hamilton is a 6'5 237lb d-man who has a right shot, skates like a deer and is great in the room (sarcastic banter ensues). They would listen to an offer of 20 first round picks.

I don't know if it's hatred as much as it is jealousy. The Leafs have the most fans in the world (and the most detractors), their popularity demands huge coverage, their fans flood opposing rinks, they generate huge sums of money. And they do all this while still being bad. I think other teams fans see this and go "hey, why can't our team be this popular?".
