So the 1st round pick doesn't make much sense.
JVR for Hamilton is the hockey part of the trade.
JVR is an FA after 1.5 more years so need to sweeten the pot.
Throw in a conditional 2nd rounder if he re-signs.
Carrick will get exposed during Expansion draft if we get Hamilton so might as well throw him in and give Calgary a defender back.
Leivo doesn't have a spot on the team and could add some long term depth to the Calgary offense.
I don't see calgary biting on it though. Leafs aren't in a position yet to start mortgaging the future. - TheMussel
Not sure Carrick has to be proteceted. |

Yeah, this is pretty much why I don’t hate this trade as much as I initially did … I like your idea of the conditional 2nd.
From our perspective, Demott and Nielsen are still in the system. kapanen or leispic can be called up to take jvr’s place. |

only if he plays 21 more games.
he can have a half a year holidays on Robidas island if he wants to stay in Leafs org.
(that is, if Leafs have two other D-man to protect over Rielly).
Right now, with no trades, it seems Gardiner,Rielly, Carrick (if playing 21 more games) will be protected. Zaitsev is exempt.

There were better players available at that #5 spot though. - Scabeh

Assuming the Leafs protect 7 F, 3 D and a G,
it would be carrick or someone else that gets protected.
I don't see anyone else outside of Rielly or Gardiner that requires protection except Carrick |

It's all very confusing, in the rules it says they have to leave 1 defenseman exposed with over 40 games. |

At minimum.
The teams don't expose players, they protect players.
Eligible players that aren't protected automatically get exposed. The clause you're talking about is in the event that, let's say, a team has 7 D-men and 6 are rookies and one is a vet, and they try to protect the vet, they can't do that because the remaining 6 are ineligible to be drafted by Vegas
In the case of the Leafs, you have (in my view)
Hunwick - Eligible
Polak - Eligible
Carrick - Protected
Rielly - Protected
Zaitsev - Ineligible (rookie)
Gardiner - Protected
Corrado - Ineligible (not enough games)
Marincin - Eligible |

the 21 games is to meet the 40/70 game team requirement to expose players with minimum number of games played.
carrick does need protection. |

Carrick needs protection because he's a 3rd year pro. I agree.
Again, the Leafs don't expose players, they protect them.
There are rules for the types of players that are required to be exposed, but that doesn't mean Carrick is exempt from being drafted over someone who meets said requirements if they're both exposed. |

Teams have to expose at least 1 D (with 40games played this years, or 70 in last two year), with a contract until at least July 2018, and which is not exempt (the young players with less than x nhl seasons).
As well at least 2FW with similar criteria and 1 goalie.
On D, it will be [at least] Marincin that will be exposed.
On FW, Leafs would either have to acquire FWs that meet the above description, OR expose 2 players out of the group of Bozak, Komarov, Martin, OR get Lupul / Leivo / Rychel up to the minimum of games. (or a combination of above). |

agreed.
maricin etc. already meet the minimum games requirement for exposure, so if the leafs want to protect carrick, there should be no rule preventing them for doing that.

i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
Hunwick, Polak don't have contracts for 17-18, so they can't count as one of the exposed D players unless they sign extensions. They will have to expose Marincin or Carrick I believe. Corrado is a RFA next year, so he also can't be included as the 1 that meets the above requirements. |

Alright, now that we've gotten the daily expansion draft rule debate out of the way, I won't want to trade Nylander.
I still think he's gonna be amazing offensively, and if he doesn't end up being a Bergeron in his own end and the Leafs decide it's time to move on, then we can still trade him for greater than what we got for Kessel |
