He'll likely go to a club who have a surplus d-man... perhaps one with a larger contract.

Unfortunately, sooner or later the advanced stats guys are going to invent the JVR Quantification - an advanced analytic that examines how many times he is successful when doing that stupid twirly move with the puck between his legs by the side of the net.

And as JVR will have the lowest JVR Quantification reading in the history of the JVR Quantification stat, we won't be able to trade him to Florida or Arizona.

it was a high price to to acquire him. 2nd rnd to Anaheim.

true... but at that time it was Burke/Nonis... they were giving away 2nd round picks like candy...

look what Bolland, Bernier and others cost.

in this case we can't look at the return so directly.... most clubs know what a 2nd is worth now...

Of course they have - analytics is essentially an attempt to extract meaningful conclusions from all available data in order to gain a competitive advantage. I can't believe that it took this long.

you forgot to include how all the available data is inconsistently collected

personally, I'm more worried that the ASG (Advanced Stats Guys) will correct the model and Jake Gardiner will no longer be a top 10 d-man in the league

No chance, if hitting is now something that hurts your team, ol' Jake there just rose a few pegs in the rankings.

There's lots of better (and proprietary) methods of collecting data now - lots of it is done electronically and then verified. Companies such as sportlogiq and stathletes are 2 such examples who then provide data back to NHL teams (among others).

Stats are great, and I sincerely hope that some of the advanced stats guys are actually doing what you mentioned instead of collecting data for a single data point and then attempting to make extrapolations and grand conclusion from that single data point.

Two 4th round picks and a 6th round pick?

Because that's Dubas' asking price for our 2nd round picks...

The one thing I'm very interested in is the really advanced tech they screwed around with at the all-star game - sewing chips in the jerseys so they can monitor speed and positioning.

I think that poop will be very interesting once they get it up and running - and will launch a huge Hockeybuzz debate as to whether player A skating X amount per game is better or worse than player B, who skates X-100 meters.

You used to be able to sort the NHL's "realtime" stats by home and away on their stats page.

But they disabled it about 2 years ago.

I strongly suspect it is because it was embarrassing - the discrepancies between home and away stats for some teams was too large to be explained by merely being away from home.

I remember one team had 3 times as many hits at home as away.

Actually, I seem to recall that the statisticians at the ACC undercounted on most categories - for both sides.

why is everyone ragging on Dubas...

he didn't make the Bernier trade, he didn't trade for Bolland?

what am I missing here?

I'm not getting this... I don't believe have made a poor personnel choice/move since he's been around...

and someone conned the Sharks out of two 2nd rounders (I believe that's true) and a 4th for Polak, Spalling and Reimer...

It was the Islanders and Detroit that had huge discrepancies from home and away stats. They were very "generous" on hits and takeaways for the home team.
