No one is saying plus minus is a hugely useful stat. Or even a great one. It needs a sh1tload of context. pretty much like any other stat derived from a nuanced, fluid, fast paced game where seemingly insignificant unquantifiable events can change the the course of a game.

They just aren't totally definitive.

But you've decided which are good and will just die on that hill.

Or you could look at individuals that had above average goal differentials relative to their team and acquire them. But +/- is bad. Funny how it went from being an overvalued stat to an undervalued one so quickly.

Just be sure to take into account as many variables as possible to strengthen your correlation to a number that is beyond reproach.
But that may be impossible. And certain variables might skew the findings in another direction.
Cause that's how regression analysis' and significance works.

And let's not forget that after plotting the values, trend lines can also be entirely misleading without context .

Essentially, his way might just be easier to find a statistic that is gonna be flawed regardless
