Yeah, it sure is terrible. Just in the same way I don't watch the games, and that hitting is overrated means never hit. Gotcha.
- James_Tanner

Oh I know you don't actually watch the games, Tanner... But I do love to read your blogs

Agreed. Most people with even a basic level of education are able to grasp the your / you're thing quite easily. Which is why it's so fascinating to me that you constantly use them improperly

You do it all the time. And each time I laugh a little bit. So to answer your question, yes, I suppose it does amuse me

- AxlRose91

Pretty sure one of two things are happening: a) you don't know the right way to do it, and so you laugh every time I do it correctly, or b) you are a huge liar.

Anyways, have fun being a complete tool. I suspect this the highlight of your day, so please, have as much fun as you can stomach.

I believe you meant to say: "one of two things IS happening"

Or was that another "typo", Professor Tanner? Did you reach for the I and the S on the keyboard, only to have your fingers slip on to the A, R and E keys?

Actually, since the noun ("things") was plural, it was correct to use 'are' in that sentence.

So not only are you a liar, but you suck at this game.

I'm loving this. Trashing advanced metrics is so blase. Getting Tanner hot under the collar about Grammar is very nice.

A liar with nothing better to do who comes on here to intentionally troll me - and who has been doing so for over three years - ain't gonna get me hot under the collar. If anything, I thought his sarcasm while being wrong was awesome.

I also really enjoy talking grammar, as nerdy as that is.

Sorry to say, bud, but you're wrong this time around.

One of two things is happening...

"One" (thing) is the subject, not "things", so to make the verb agree with the subject you have to use "is".

Using the same sentence structure, you would say "One of the boxes is open" not "... are open." A single box out of multiple boxes is open. One thing out of two things is happening.

You seem to be defending the subject. I don't care, it's just funny how you are willing to engage on particular topics.

There's no way you taught an English class. At any level. See the explanation from PancakesPenner. If it's too complicated, drop by a public school in your neighbourhood and have one of the grade fivers walk you through it

But I'm assuming you know that you're wrong. At this point, it would simply be too humiliating for you to admit it

Ladies and gentlemen.....it's Mr James "I always admit my mistakes" Tanner!

While this is a good old college try, you are incorrect.

The subject of the sentence is "things" not "one." One isn't even a noun in this case. Numbers are rarely ever nouns because they can't be modified. In this case, the word "one" certainly isn't a noun or the subject. The subject is Things and I was originally correct.

Even your 'same sentence structure' example was off, because instead of your example, the same thing would actually be "One of the two boxes are open." And also, in your example, BOXES is clearly the noun and again, it's plural, necessitating the use of are.

When the noun is a plural, you use are.

However, full credit for the attempt and not being rude about it. This is extremely pedantic, I should point out, and you aren't likely to be corrected unless you're in a writing course or some whacked out internet troll attempts to show you up.

Oooooh, except that other guy was actually wrong. You continue to look dumber by the post. I could have you banned, but this is honestly too much fun.

You ever played a contact sport?

The effects of hits are cumulative.

Continuously pounding a guy will slow him down, make him more tentative. It may not have an effect on that shift, but it eventually will.

Thanks just started reading the reply and was waiting for someone to point this out. Have some of these people not watched a complete game or a playoff series and seen how a defenceman or forward become reluctant to go in the corner for a puck .

Speaking of good old college try, you should get on the horn to Purdue University and let them know they're teaching people incorrect grammar. That boxes example was directly from their online writing lab.

In a sentence like a sandwich or other snack is included in the price you use is. This is the traditional rule, which says that in a sentence where the verb follows a list separated from or (and the single items of the list are singular), the subject is singular.
(Reference: the New Oxford American Dictionary.)

In a sentence like one or more photos are better you use are because the noun closer to the verb is plural (more photos).

Technically you are both wrong, either in the answer or the explanation.

This is amazing. Watching you try to wildly explain to us that we're both wrong, and the sky is actually green, is making my day

No one is arguing that "things" is the subject. But only "ONE" of them IS happening

This is the second time you've stubbornly refused to admit a basic mistake, despite multiple people pointing it out to you

The fact that you're defending such a primary mistake is awesome

Loving this

This wouldn't be the first time that I or a colleague have disagreed with the OWL, as good a resource as it is. I still think your example wasn't the same thing, even if I was wrong in saying that 'one of the boxes is open' was wrong. Though, I dispute that it was wrong, because I would write 'one of the boxes are open' because I'd think that boxes being plural.......

Like I said: extremely pedantic. You could go either way with this one, however, in my original point, I was and am still correct.

For the record: you couldn't go either way. One way is entirely correct, and the other way (obviously your way) is entirely incorrect

Nah dude. I was right. So was Pancakes. And Purdue University

We all have a basic grasp on the English language

I wish I could have seen your face when you realized your mistake. About five minutes after you called yourself the Obama of grammar. Ahhhh....priceless
