Nielsen and Dermott make most chance of being there - MaximusAurelius[in a couple of years] but in the meantime Leafs need to make some changes on D.
Rielly and Zaitsev should be there to stay in top 4.
Leafs need at least 2 other guys for the top4 (a left hand D to play alongside Zaitsev and a rh-d to play with Rielly).
Gardiner is expensive to have on bottom pairing / PP.
Carrick could be on 3rd pairing, but he brings similar things as Gardiner (not very good in own zone, offensively quite ok).
Seems quite obvious Leafs need to make a few trades and get an update on D; probably will cost a few out of Soshnikov, Brown, Kapanen, Gardiner, Carrick, etc..

The problem is that none of the players that you made available at the end of your comment are enough for the Leafs to make a significant upgrade on D.
If you want an upgrade on D, it's a significant player going the other way. - TheMussel
I agree. Trade Nylander plus prospect for D |

Brown and Sosh aren't going anywhere.
Gardiner's been on the block since we got him.

How may points does hyman have? What a joke. Matthews
Marner Reilly Anderson brown Martin shosh -----these guys I like for there work ethic etc game to game. Outside of these guys I am not happy with what they call rebuild. 80% of defense should NOT even be in NHL - BreathLeafs2015
I'd like to think Carrick/Gardiner/Rielly/Z are all NHL players.
Maybe you should watch some other teams games.....and see how pathetic their 56 guys are....you'd be praying for some Polak/Hunwick if you were the Coyotes or the Nucks. |

I agree, on the same time the expansion draft does provide for an extraordinary situation (wpg, stl) to get a good d-man for 'cheaper' as normally possible.
Leafs do have 2 2nd rounders 2017 they can give up as well. + JVR
Personally I think Leafs should sell high on Nylander in order to get a young top2 d-man, although that's a high risk.
I'm not sure why, but I just think he'll pan out less good as we are all hoping.
(could turn out to be biggest mistake of last 10y as well to trade Nylander though).
I would be delighted if I'm completely wrong on this of course |

I really don't want to see Nylander in any trade discussions. The Leafs aren't in a position to sell high at this point. That's what has gotten them in trouble in the past. See what Nylander becomes and if he's not in the plans, trade him.
1 d-man doesn't put the Leafs in contention, let's just wait it out. |

I just think Leafs need the D way more than Nylander.
obviously would need to get an excellent D guy back; Seth Jones / H Lindholm or those types of guys for Nylander to make it attractive to Leafs. |

Sticking with my prediction that Matthews will lead the Leafs in scoring this year. Even a 13 game goalless slump can't stop him.
And whoever said we should trade Nylander and a pick for a d-man....gross.
We're still rebuilding, we have time to find a d-man. |

At $8million still beaten by Carolina and jersey. Canes put babs to shame - BreathLeafs2015
They had plenty of chances but refused to shoot the puck at the net and opted for the pretty play which wasn't working in that game. |

I'm mostly intrigued how you get 80% of 8 guys.
Does one of them have a bum leg or something...? |

So the Leafs are doomed right? Every time Matthews has a good game they lose. We need to get him off the team ASAP. Maybe some seasoning in Orlando. |
