You can, but if you do that, you can only protect 4 fowards.

I know, but it would be worth it for the right defenceman.

Never expected Burns to hit FA. Not surprised he was resigned, although that's a steep price at 8x8 and will go until he's 39!
Sharks better hope Burns continues at his current level of play into his late 30's.

Seems like there may be some options through trade due to the expansion thing. Hopefully Lou Lams gives us a nice surprise at some point and produces a nice shiny new dman for our backend.

I'm starting to get good vibes from Dermott as well. The few times I've seen him in the AHL, he's looked solid. Same with Neillson.

We might be okay even without an FA signing. Still missing a #2 possibly.

Good news is, Marner Nylander and Matthews won't need to be protected.

#7 defensemen are a dime a dozen. I wouldn't stress over Carrick.

This is why they'd lose him to Vegas:

Yeah. Along with a little help from Bernier and Sparks, that defense group led us all the way to picking 1st overall.
I'm glad we got Matthews, but I hope I never see such a sad collection of defenders in a Toronto uniform again.

Oh wow, so Carrick is amongst some of the most elite defensemen in the league, like Brett Pesce, Michal Kempny, and Jake Gardiner.
