I thought the exclusive UFA window was before the draft. Because teams can talk to UFAs in the week prior to July 1. - BetterCallSaul

you really should read the last rules on NHL and the expansion draft.
Las Vegas can speak 18/19 June with pending FAs.
If they agree on a contract, then the player's old team is 'freed' from losing another player in expansion draft.
So if Leafs want to keep Polak, they either offer him a new contract before 19th of June, or protect him in expansion draft and have 22nd june - 1st July to negotiate a new contract with him.
Both scenarios very unlikely to happen of course. - MaximusAurelius
either or... why the (frank) would they take polak?
rules be damned, thats not happening |

I don't know. I think the best play is to leave Bozak exposed. I don't think you will garner much for him via a trade. Losing him in the draft in deleting his contract wouldn't have a profound negative impact on this team. - BetterCallSaul
Good deadline trade bait for a team heading to the playoffs and a bonus player to expose if necessary |

Maybe. I think he could act as a good shield for teams trying to sneak players through the draft. He's a known commodity and Vegas will need centres. Depends on if LV wants players with term control or if they want to be more competitive out of the gate. |

the center position... you are bang on... any decent centers exposed are going to have a very good chance of being picked |

Why in earth are you questioning someone's understanding if the rules, when you clearly don't know?
If the leafs want to keep polak, they don't have to protect him as he's a ufa and not eligible in the expansion draft.
Why would they protect polak anyways? |

Didn't watch the game last night. Lost on a shorty... Didn;t give up a goal 5 v 5, but lose the game. Kids have to pick it up. |

they'd played the perimeter game too much last night... they need to take the punichment and get into that dirty area in front of the net more in tight checking game... be the same thing they need to do tonight if they hope to win |

as always, you have no clue or you did not read the conversation.
LV has a 48hr window to negotiate with pending FAs prior to expansion draft.

Matthews is going need a straight jacket if some of these chances he's creating don't start producing. |

where does it say that if LV signs one of these pending FAs (polak) that they are no longer able to select one of the exposed players in the expansion draft? |

I really hope the team sticks to the blueprint and doesn't go to high priced free agency for an upgrade at D. I mean, it worked out so well in Burke year one, and then worked so well for Edmonton over the past few seasons too. We need Komisarek 2.0!
Side note, Burns was never going to hit free agency, especially after how he showed up in the final last year when the rest of the team didn't. You either need to draft these guys, or bring them in when they're still young and somewhat unproven. Either way its a gamble. |

various reports on this in October, one of them:

by the way, apparently Vegas does not have to give up compensation picks if they sign a pending RFA. (RFA have to qualify with the # games played I think) |

Don't foresee a problem with high priced top D being available.
Draft them soon IMO |

The Canes had a lot of players sneaking pass the Leafs D last night. |

a deal that might work for Leafs and Stl at deadline considering upcoming expansion draft:
Carrick + Brown + 2nd SJ
for
Shattenkirk (resigned) + Jaskin
(something around these pieces at least.

that doesn't seem right........they can just sign any RFA they want with no consequences or compensation?
I don't think the league, or other 30 teams, would allow that. |

I think it will take WAY more than that to get a signed shattenkirk alone, let alone including jaskin |

The RFAs would be exposed so they would be eligible to pick them up through the expansion draft regardless.
Unexposed RFAs can't be signed without compensation. |

yikes, that's brutal........so teams with lots of young guys going RFA are kind of (frank)ed (Ottawa, buffalo, Winnipeg, wash, tampa, etc) |

This is nothing new, it's just a different way of looking at the expansion draft rules.
If a player is left exposed, they can get picked up.
Teams can protect whichever RFAs they choose.
If a pending RFA is protected, Vegas has to offer sheet to sign them just like any other team. |
