I will be disappointed if Manning ends up as the 3rd defenseman protected
- YuenglingJagr

Who else would you protect?

Streit, Schultz, Del Zotto are all FA.
MacDonald you wouldn't protect.
Provorov doesn't need protection.

I guess Del Zotto if you plan to resign him but I think he could be traded at the TDL.

i like mccarron but i see no reason to trade him to MTL
- YuenglingJagr

I would do Del Zotto for McCarron if they want a defenseman bad.

I like McCarron too.

I keep watching Vancouver and how they handle Virtanen. They seem to keep bringing him up and down. I wonder if he would be available.

Jesper Pettersson and Maxim Lamarche deserve a look, too.

How long do you think the Flyers go with this kind of inconsistent play until maybe they make a move. Not necessarily a trade but maybe bring Morin/Hagg up? Maybe Laughton in for cough cough Vandevelde.

Trade trade and Schultz as much as possible at the TDL this year. Sign some junk in the off season you don't need to protect. Get a top 5 pick next year. Come back the year after stronger

Depends on the reason, it could mean MDZ continued to struggle and/or was traded at the TDL. What would you prefer to Manning in that case...a trade?

BUt if you move all them you have to have guys ready. And I doubt the Flyers would bring up guys from Lehigh if they are in playoff spot. I think they would want them to be in that situation instead of playing for a tanking team in the instance.

Hextall isnt going to let the teams record dictate when young players are called up, barring a trade.

Here is my thinking.

If I am trading someone at the deadline I would be looking back to get guys that are younger and can be part of the future, high picks, and players I might not have to protect.

Manning on the deal he is on is valuable to the Flyers because the cap hit is low. I hope he continues to play well because if he can play a 4/5/6 role at his cap hit I can use money somewhere else like a sniper or 3rd line center.

Yeah but I also don't think he is just going to let the team play inconsistent hockey all season.

Do you think he would pull a trade over promoting someone from Lehigh before maybe they are ready?

With a trade, he has to find another team willing to trade where he can make the team better both now and in the future. Not sure he'll be able to find a partner.

At the same time, he doesn't seem like the type of GM to call a player up just to "shake things up" so to speak. He'll call a player up when he thinks they can be contributors to the NHL club, barring injury call-ups.

Hextall has a long term vision. I dont beleive he is going to be reactionary and make any deals for this season, that move away from that long term vision. What Hextall is trying to do takes time. Look at where he came from, and the LA model. Fans there were impatient and calling for Lombardi's head on a platter before the right moves came along and were made, that helped them win. Hextall is committed to what he has set out to do.

That's where I wonder where they see Hagg and Morin. Hagg has been in AHL longer. But I wonder how close both are. Close enough to bring a new element to the Flyers? Problem I see is with the guys already on the roster they just don't really have the wiggle room right now.

that would not prevent me from trading Streit at minimum he'll provide the most return at the TDL

We could still roll in no particular order

So Q1 into the season here are my expansion draft selected protections. I do expect MDZ to win a spot back on the list but he hasn't justified an extension just yet.

Giroux
Voracek
Couturier
Simmonds
Schenn
Raffl
Cousins

Ghost
Gudas
Manning

Mason

- Baxter27

I would leave Mason off till he gets an extension, just like MDZ. Otherwise, I agree 100%. Cousins has earned a protection slot over Weise, Read and Laughton. The rest of the picks are obvious.

I understand the long term view thing. but last year he didn't really make moves because he wanted to give the team a chance to compete for the playoffs? So he was still looking at the present.

This team is inconsistent right now. Does he just let it play out and hope things get better while maybe falling out of a playoff spot? I know still early but right now I feel like this team has kind of regressed from last year a little.

I'm a Mason fan so probably some bias here but his body of work calls for an extension in my opinion. I think his struggles have been overblown this season. Then again, the basic stats say otherwise.

I'd wait till the deadline to make a decision on Mase. That's more than three months away.

I keep coming back to the Weise signing being an expansion maneuver. Big body forward who has played in the West before, very reasonable contract for an expansion team that is going to have a lot of money to throw around.
- Mordecai

His contract is also frontloaded.

I dont agree that was the reason why Hextall didnt make any moves. One, he wasnt going to trade a future asset to try and win now, and secondly if a move presented itself that fit into his long term vision, he wouldve made it. Hextall is not going to panic.

Probably a good call. My confidence level is just higher in a Mase extension than a MDZ extension at this point.

Was Weise maybe a panic move to add size? I thought it would turn out better than most but right now it isn't looking great.

I would have loved to known if they were in on Colton Sceviour. I thought he would have been perfect here and added some size for probably less money,
