That whole "equal value" calculation of draft picks is a load of crap. It isn't as bad as Yost draft pick value logic, but when you give up a first in that area you are taking a huge chance and the extra picks. ALL the extra picks have to pan out, against the odds, to break even if that 1st rounder you gave up lives up to his draft position.

I guess the thinking at the time was that the Leafs needed quantity in the system.

Also not impressed with them going off the board to take the Russian kid in the 2nd.

Very true, but for all the crap he has taken here, and considering they gave up nothing to get him, he has carved himself out quite a decent career, and will probably around for a while yet.

He has looked like he has the worst scoring touch in the league the last 10 games, but literally nothing else about him looks remotely like Yakupov. He'll break out of this, and you have to figure at least 3 years before he becomes a good #1 C in this league.

That and Huntercs belief in dermott must have played a significant role.

Yeah, I think that has a lot to do with it. Dermott may be a good Dman one day, but he kinda looks like a marginal bet for the NHL right now. The Leafs will give him a chance to develop though and it is pretty much impossible to tell with young D.
