GMTM is just about out of runway here.

He needs to figure out how to offload some of the dead-weight and bring in some more youth and draft picks to make up for the resources he foolishly has given away in his time here.

If he continues to play well, perhaps Gionta can go at the deadline to a contender. Gorges should also be shopped at the deadline too. Worse defencemen have found new homes at the deadline.

If he comes back and proves he can stay healthy for an extended stretch, perhaps Bogosian could be an attractive piece for a playoff team.

Kane, Girgensons and Ennis need to be off this team as well. Any kind of return would be welcome.

so i've got this right...

just over a year into the building process and just over a year into bylsma's tenure you're ready to begin, in the very least, a major retooling by bringing in six youngins to replace those you'd like shipped out?

That started when they sold a huge chunk of the farm for Kane and Bogosian...and then a few months later did the same for o'reilly. This is at least 2 years of building. These issues with Bylsma aren't new either, they are more or less the reason he was let go in Pittsburgh.

I'm offended you don't feel the same way I do, and therefore I will speak irrationally and not think before I type a reply to you...

Am I doing this correctly?

Remember when this place wasn't a place for people to moan and complain about everything, but to actually discuss things rationally?

so you consider the 2014-15 season, the one with ted Nolan as head coach, a building year?...even though kane was out for the season and they hadn't drafted Eichel yet?

edit...or traded for o'reilly and Lehner?

Well, we might very well be too far behind the pack to make a realistic push for the playoffs by the time Eichel returns. No sense making a heroic run to 10th. There is work to be done here. The Leafs are young throughout their lineup, we need to match that if we are going to keep pace with their progress in the division.

Only Bogosian, of the players listed, likely figure into GMTMs long range plan.

Gionta and Gorges are near the end of their runs here. Getting anything for either of them would be a bonus.

Ennis and Girgensons are Darcy-era holdovers. I doubt GMTM cares if either are around going forward.

Removing Kane would be addition by subtraction. We just aren't as good a team with him in the lineup.

Consider who they added in that year. Most of those guys were thought to be core players moving forward. Long term deal to Moulson, long ish term for Gionta. Massive trade for kane (yes he was injured i get that but would they have not made the deal if he wasn't?) and Bogosian, who was healthy at the time. Then months later O'Reilly and Lehner. Thats a lot of prospects, picks and dollars going out for players in the span of one year. If that doesnt count as the "building" process I dont know what does.

I get what you're saying and without getting into the players you mentioned individually, i'm of the opinion that they shouldn't throw a bunch of kids to the wolves...

as for Toronto, it's early in the season...if they continue doing what they're doing after the all-star break then there's something to be said...but for now I won't place them on a pedestal

To build on my earlier post, here is a projected lineup:

Nylander/Eichel/Reinhart
Okposo/O'Reilly/Baptiste
Foligno/Larsson/Fasching
Carrier/?/Bailey

Ristolainen/Guhle
Bogosian/McCabe
?/?

Lehner
Nilsson

The ? could be filled by prospects acquired in trades or UFAs.

now I get where you're coming from...

yes, kane and bogo kinda began the building process...however, i'm looking at it as a full year with all those pieces on the ice plus the new head coach which for me, began last season...you seem to be looking at it differently...

Fair enough, mind you in the case of Kane and Bogosian im also relying on the games they played before they got here. The flaws there havent changed and they were unlikely to given that they had played a substantial amount of nhl hockey. Same is true of Bylsma, he told everyone he sat out a year and changed his ways and reverted back to the same guy from pittsburgh like 6 games into last season

This is hard to do when the GM has for the most part exhibited a large amount of impatience, especially when you consider the time frame that he himself gave.

The funny thing is as bad as it may seem i genuinely dont believe it would be difficult at all to "fix it". All hed have to do is admit it was a mistake, problem is it seems like hed rather sink with ship then admit its got holes.

How is it impatient to get rid of Gionta, Gorges, Ennis, Girgensons and Kane?

Haven't we gone as far as we are going to go with them? Do any of them project as impact players on this roster beyond this season?

Could probably add Kulikov to the list too. He might fetch a return at the deadline.

Agreed. Impatient would be wanting to trade Reinhart for spare parts. Wanting to get rid of dead weight is just good business.

Gionta and Franson will bring back 3rds. Kuli will bring a 2nd easy. Bogo, Gorges, are not up to be UFAs, selling them as such would be foolish especially Bogo, he needs to have a solid return if he's moved.

If we move Kuli, Franson, and Bogo we have no defense (I know, we have defense now) But seriously, this is what we'd be left with.

he said he wanted two drafts--2014 and 2015
he said he was going to trade picks and prospects for young vets to speed up the process

I don't remember a time-frame

Id have to think any move involving Bogo would bring a d-man back if for no other reason than they'd need to work out the cap/roster spots.
