We have 1 very good Dman, one good Dman, and two forwards, Kadri and Marner, who are doing anything.

Easy peasy. Continue to poop the bed this year. Draft Foote or Liljegren. Overpay for Shattenkirk as a UFA. Then we'll have 4 capable dmen (still no #1). Wait for Nielsen to make 5 and then we need one more.

Part of me really wishes they had built from the D out first though

Yeah Sosh Gauthier Hyman might be a cheap energetic 4th line in future. Connor Brown doesn't really look too interested anymore.

I thnk they know that, but the truth is there isn't much more that can be done. Nylander and Matthews are 2 of the 3 best offensibe pieces on the team and they have done nothing for a few weeks now.

The team is just really not good and their best players are rookies with a lot to learn.

I cant believe that Marner plays a grittier North South game than Nylander or Matthews.

I get having defensive presence like Hyman on their line, but I can't help feel someone on the opposite wing with a higher offensive ceiling would help that line lots. Even Komarov or Soshnikov would be a better fit. Brown as well. I don't see how continuously splitting nylander and matthews without first yanking Hyman off of that line is a better solution.

I'm not sure why JVR and kadri were ever split up, and marner would be explosive on their wing.

I think with a dman trade, they can be very patient and wait for the ideal situation. No reason to do it now to try to upgrade a team in a season when they're not gonna win the Cup anyway and they know it. This is where they really have to stick to the plan and not get rash because with all the excitement with the rookies, it will be a huge bummer if/when it becomes another year of pain.

Consistently Marner has by far been the best rookie. Mathews has been good but streaky. Kinda like Kessel was. Nylander is the same. Plays when he wants to coasts when he wants to. But even at that, there's flashes of brilliance in all three. Biggest prob is the defense so until that's fixed I expect a lot of pain
