The U.S. system is not a pure democracy where a simple majority rules on everything.

It is a representative republic where elected officials make decisions. Representation of the 3 branches of the federal government is based on a both a state and population level. The system got a result it was designed to achieve with the presidential election.

The Canadian system (and many other countries with the highest levels of democracy) can also get a result where the PM’s party does not win the most votes. There isn’t even a national vote for the PM directly in Canada.

Sweet

I like when in our elections, where we have three legit national parties, the winning party gets around 40% of the vote but only 50% of eligible voters bother to cast a ballot so really the ruling party has like 25% support lololololololol

They're not pure democracies, but they're still democratic, in that the people vote to choose the government.

But they are both deeply flawed, and promote an environment where citizens vote for who they dislike less, rather than who they'd actually want to lead them.

That, and the 3rd party really only exists to canabalize votes from the nearest ideological relation.

At the end of the day, you can say every government system is flawed in some way. But to say the U.S. is flawed because the office of the president is not based on a majority of votes is short-sighted.

The 3 levels of federal government need to be looked at as whole. Congress is represented by population. Senate is represented by States. The presidential vote through the electoral college is a direct amalgamation of the 2. All 3 together give some form of shared representation to both states and population. Individual states would never have agreed to the union peacefully without what they believed to be fair representation.

A system only representative of population would mean the top urban centers would basically rule over the rest of the country. The Canadian system and many others also don’t allow this to happen either.

And it’s all a moot point to talk about changing it in the U.S.. It’s a constitutional amendment to change it including 75% of states agreeing to it. Will never get changed peacefully. We’ll see a calexit before the states willingly give up that power.
