Trying Gardiner on wing will plug a hole on defense.

Absolutely!!! Addition by subtraction!! JG is awful..I wish Lou would trade him asap while he might have some other fool GM thinking he's worth something. I don't give a crap about stats, he doesn't pass the eye test...

Wouldn't break my heart, now the Kessel trade still hurts me.

If Bozak got to line up against Case Czakis all night you;d all be saying, "Wow what a great game he had".

Unfortunately for Bozak, he got the pleasure of being turned inside out by Tavares all night.

I thought Kadri's line was up against JT. I don't have a huge problem with Bozak in a supporting role at $4.2M.

and which stats would those be?
The ones playing with Kessel or the one not playing with Kessel.

His p/60 better last year than year previous with PK

I was just looking at his CF% for this year compared to Kadri though.

You trade JVR for a defensemen, then all the talk will be about how the leafs lack size up front and should trade for a big sturdy winger that can park himself in front of the net.
The point is the leafs aren't at the stage where they can think about plugging holes yet. They don't have the depth of NHL talent so any trade to plug a hole, just opens up a different hole.

Better to stay the course and continue to develop from within.

(Trying gardiner on the wing isn't such a bad idea)

JVR is expendable.... He's a big body - yes, but the guy plays softer than butter. Doesnt go into the corners, doesnt throw the body, and stands in front the net but only because he's told to. He could be replaced with some skill from the Marlies. I'm of the mentality defense before offence. I'd rather have a big stay at home, reliable defender to play with Reilly rather than have JVR shying away from the corners, when we could have soshnikov or liepsic fighting for a spot in his role.

You don't have to crash and bang to be an effective power forward. JVR reminds me a lot of Dave Andreychuk. If Marner can set up JVR like Gilmour did with Andreychuk, then he could score in bunches. There is no one on the marlies coming to replace the big power forward skillset. Closest would be Josh Leivo, but he doesn't project that far up the lineup.

I suppose youre right.... Im just afraid we'll look back and see JVR in the same way we do with Ponikarovsky or Antropov.. they're softer than that time I was forced to walk through a seniors nudist beach.

If I were the leafs I would be in big on Shattenkirk. At least as a free agent.

Contenders aren't built off of free agents but plenty of contenders add significant players through that. He's 27 years old so giving him a 5 or 6 year deal is no problem. If they can work out a reasonable term it would be a great fit on this team.

marner
nylander
matthews

all better centers than him

edit: kadri, forgot him too

bozak isnt good enough defensively to play on the 3rd line. his only asset is his mediocre offense. he's an ahler on a contender.

Bozak's an AHL player. You really must hate him.

Bozak has 5pts in 9 games...that's an average of just over 45pts/season....not far off his average.

Top line minutes, PP minutes and playing with great offensive players......

I don't mind Bozak but he kinda falls in no mans land for me.....

Not good enough offensively for top 2 lines,
Not good enough defensively for bottom 2 lines.

He won't get the Leafs a top 2 D in a trade so Bozak or his contract don't bother me yet.

Once they address the D, then I would start really moving out the last bit of dead weight.

Where does he fit on a contender? Not good enough offensively to be on the 1st or 2nd line, way too bad defensively to be on the 3rd or 4th line. AHLer.
