Apparently the coming draft is significantly less skilled than the past three |

As long as teams in from draft like Anaheim and Vancouver were golden. |

Spurgeon / Hamonic / Ekholm / Trouba are four d-man that almost certainly will be available pre-expansion draft.
So Leafs should do fine in getting help on D for next season.
Ekholm is the guy I would want most.
Holland
Rychel
Brown
Leipsic
Griffith
Leivo
have most trade value for a team that has to give up a player that otherwise would surely be left unprotected and selected by Las Vegas. (EDIT: since these guys will not need to be protected or can be left unprotected since RFA status (and LV if going to approach an RFA it would probably not on those guys)
Based on that, I hereby go out and predict a trade around:
Rychel + Leipsic / Leivo to Nashville for Mattias Ekholm (just before trade deadline). |
|
|
|
p.s.:
a player with potentially the highest trade value of all players in NHL (for teams that have issues with cap and protecting players in expansion draft):
an injured James Van Riemsdyk ; injury that will happen in next 20 games (so he won't get to his 23 games needed to qualify to be protected) but projected to be healthy again at start of playoffs.
(let's hope JVR stays healthy of course!)
EDIT.. I guess you can't trade injured players..? |

If we're targeting Nashville, it has to be Ellis. He's a righty, he's a solid player, and he's locked in at $2.5m for two more years after this.
Spurgeon is another guy who would be a quality addition though. |

Pronger, Savard etc says otherwise. Hell, even Kessel was injured when we traded for him. Horton too. |

Although I agree we need to make a move for defense. I'm against trading our best bets at having a "spark plug" type player that this team desperately needs. With all our high end skill we need a guy like rychel or Leipsic to provide grit and round out our team. And then we won't need to sign plugs like Martin and hope they can be our sparkplug. It would be nice if rychel could turn into a Tom Wilson type for us. We need that badly.

yeah.
i guess though he'd be protected over ekholm.
in any case it will probably turn out that Nsh will go and protect 8 players, of which 4 d-men (instead of the 7fw, 3d).
on fw they have Forsberg, Neal, Ryan Johanssen and Smith/Wilson; certainly prefer to lose a fw (Smith/Wilson) over Ellis or Ekholm.
I guess eventually alot of teams will end up protecting 8 players if they have 4 good d-men.
NYI is probably in worst shape with the NMC and lot of good young players. |
