Honestly, with Lindholm signing I think the most prudent thing to do for the Leafs would be to stand pat and NOT make ridiculous trades for Trouba or Fowler. Is it too much to ask for one of Nielsen, Dermott, or Valiev to blossom into a Top 4 d man?

I would trade for Fowler, not Troubadour though. Unless Winnipeg is will to take Gardiner as the main piece I don't see anything of fair value I'd be willing to offer them if I'm in charge of the Leafs. Fowler you can probably get. I'm firmly on the Trade JVR side of line in the sand. Straight across I think the Leafs would be seen as the team that gave up more, but if you include a cap dump and a prospect coming back to Toronto then I don't imagine many Leafs fans would be unhappy with that deal.

Nielsen has 5 pts in 6 games as an AHL rookie so far. That's promising, but yeah, if this NHL top 4 blossoming happens, it will likely take until after next season.

Not at all. But how long will it take?

The leafs will most certainly trade or sign a top 4 d man when they get the best chance to do so. It's probably thier number 1 priority and it will be until they get one.
