you're actually pretty entertaining when you're not discussing advanced stats. You did lose me when you said trade 3-4 first round picks for Jake freaking Muzzin. Also, your music choices are steaming hot garbage. - gtrman09
Ya 3 1st for muzzinπ¨ I have no words to .....James? ????? |

Part of what makes it such a bad trade is that the Oilers could have gotten a defenseman just as good as Larson without trading Hall.
I guarantee you there is at least one team around that would given you a similar player for 3 or 4 draft picks. Then you keep Hall and you're in a way better off spot. - James_Tanner

So they're all gonna justify an average of more than $8mil/season going into their second contracts? Or are you counting on Matthews to get $12mil? - MaximumBone
I guess McDavid gets 15?π¨ |

Yeah but you can only speculate as to whom. And even then, its just your opinion that said mystery Defenceman is a better fit than Larsson. |

I love how condescending you are and yet you're judging the worst trade in NHL history as good after seven games. - James_Tanner
Condescending is exactly how you respond to each person that challenges you.
I also clearly stated "at this point at least" in reference to the trade.
Worst trade in history? If ones recollection of hockey history only goes as far back as when advanced stats websites came to be, then I guess so. |

Well this was a train wreck of a post...So you think in todays market Hall is worth a top 10 goalie? |

Very interesting blog James. The poster who mentioned the now illegal contracts had a good point. No way the Hawks win three without them. Personally I'd take one cup over contending for years. |

You are obviously an alt of some loser who is probably banned for the 30th time and brags about how cool that is. Go back to the Oilers thread, you'll fit right in. |

Besides, this is a Tanner thread, discussing BOTH the Leafs and Oilers...or what, does that make this place a Donkeys only thread? |

Those same Hawks also didnt trade 3 firsts and 4 seconds for their players. - Joel_Eh
Well, they did trade a #1 to the Coyotes to get Vermette at the deadline of their 2015 Cup run, so in essence, they did do exactly what James suggested in the blog, which is to surround your young players with enough talent to maximize their ability while they can afford to do so. Remember, that came before Toews and Kane 10.5 mil per contracts kicked in. And, Vermette was an instrumental contributor. So I will argue that Tanner's strategy worked in this case, even though 19 and 88 were not on ELC's, they were still manageable. Saad was ELC though, so again, same principal. |

There are always ways to fit a dynasty under the salary cap as long as you have players under contracts that are no longer legal!
- YuenglingJagr
Fair enough. Then I guess you are bitter that the Oilers, Canadians, and Red Wings had dynasties too, because they played in a no salary cap league? |

Three is ample evidence every single day that NHL teams constantly make horrible mistakes. I am 100% confident I would be a better GM than Peter Chiarelli, Bob Murray, Brian Burke, Anyone who's ever run Ottawa or Buffalo, Dave Nonis.........I could go all day.
Being an NHL GM is as simple as a) being born into an NHL family b) playing in the NHL c) being a player agent (which first requires being a lawyer) c) starting your own stats company.
I think that covers 100% of the NHL's GMs.
What I lack in hockey experience first hand, I make for by being one of the only people on this earth capable of an original thought, having been to college, and being an expert in critical thinking.
I dunno, I think I could hack it, no problems. Also, I should probably point out (before you pull something trying to respoind) that I am only giving the answer this question deserves, I'm not entirely serious. - James_Tanner
