That said, the defense seems to be doing one of two things at the moment:

1) Absolutely (frank) all, and literally allowing the other team to get right in for a top quality chance that even Jesus Price wouldn't get, or
2) Standing with Richard in hand right in Freddie's sightline making it impossible for him to see the puck.

Now Ander7en definitely needs to get himself going, but I wouldn't put all the blame on his shoulders when his defense are hanging him out to dry...

Leafs pefect season: Matthews scores 40 goals and 100 points...Nylander scores 80 points, Kadri and a whole bunch of others hit 50 points, Leafs score 280+ goals.

Surrender 300 plus goals. Finish the season in 30th place. I can deal with that.

Lots of out of position play, lots of people trying to cover for others instead of covering their own players. I think some of the veterans are trying to cover too much for the rookies leaving everyone out of position.

defense is crap, but no long-term anchors there. more flexibility to fit that than goaltending.

Yup. Hunwick and Polak coming off the books is going to be very helpful. And with the expansion draft coming up, it might be possible to snag a useful guy or two as teams get themselves sorted out and figure out who they need to keep and who they can let go.
