Well, the 'cap dump' part would be the part that got them out of cap trouble, the Theodore bit was the cost to get out from under....not terribly complex. Not trying to sound snarky but it happens (Bickell etc) when a team is cap strapped.

They sure did make an error. As someone pointed out in the previous blog, they added to payroll this offseason (eg. Bernier @ 4m) knowing they still needed to re-sign Lindholm

I get it, but I can't see them sacrificing a prospect like Theodore. Then again, they are trying to win before it's too late for Getz/Perry/Kesler... and they did take on Bernier's 4m cap hit despite needing to re-sign Rackel and Lindholm, and they did hire Randy Carlyle, and Nonis before that, so the more I think about it, I guess it's not as ridiculous as it seems at first glance.

I sincerely believe the Ducks management team wants a win in the next few years, like you've eluded to. Prospects might get sacrificed. Doesn't necessarily mean it will be Toronto that gets a deal made with Anaheim, but whichever team does will probably be seen as the winner. The Ducks are a budget team, getting squeezed by a potential star defenceman, with a few questionable contracts and a core that is facing a decline. Not a good situation.
