I've honestly got no idea why the Sens made that trade. They could've had all those guys drop off the end of this year and offered Shattenkirk 6.9 mil per year and be in a much better position.

Fair enough not wanting to pay Greening, Cowen and Michalek for one more year, but how they came to the idea that Phaneuf was a player that could make them better and a contract they were fine to take on, is beyond me.

It's honestly one of the worst trades made in recent memory (and will only get worse).

Obviously no way near as bad, but the Brassard trade was a puzzler as well.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong but both him and Ceci have been an absolute tire fire. It's only been 5 games but yikes.

We really need both players to step up but I've never been a Phaneuf fan. His skill set is depreciating and that cap hit is a nightmare. For a team that counts it's pennies they definitely could of spent that money wiser but hey, win now mode smh

Again, really hope I'm wrong

I think phaneuf has looked pretty good this year so far.....I think he's being anchored BADLY by Ceci so far, who looks lost and confused on almost every shift. hopefully it's just growing pains of a young guy having to learn a new system for the first time in his professional career. TBD I guess.

phaneuf's contract is a little rough, but the cap hit is much higher than the actual $$ (which is what is important to our penny pinching dbag of an owner) and the sens aren't a cap team....so not a huge deal there.

as for him as a player, I think he's a very very good 2nd pairing d-man and has looked pretty good in Ottawa. obviously leaf fans think he sucks because he was HORRIBLY mis-used and mis-cast in Toronto. he was brought in to be a top pairing elite d-man, and he's clearly not that.

Ottawa gave up scraps, hell less than scraps, to get a bonafide top 4 d-man.....I have no issues with that trade.

as for brassard, I didn't love the trade at first but brass has looked pretty good so far. zibby has been putting up points, but he's always been a streaky player. i'll reserve judgement on that deal until zibby can prove that he can be productive for more than 5 out or 20 games at a time.

Dion is on pace for a 0 point and -82 season. I've only seen a few games (in the Sens region) and he looks like he's even lost a step from his Leafs days.

He should be able to carry a guy like Ceci and not get dragged down. He's a vet of 10 years.

I think the big thing the Sens traded away was the chance to really start again with their cap structure. They traded away a few middling contracts for one albatross contract.

Not that it matters, but they could've approached some UFA's this season.

that's like saying that Matthews is on pace for a 100 goal and 150pt season so let's give him the hart now and elect him into the hall of fame (which some Toronto media already seem to have done, lol). dion will get his points, and once his partner figures it out (or gets switched out) his +/- will normalize. he's a good player, and quite frankly the alternatives to him that are in Ottawa's organization (including those that would still be here had the trade not been made) are terrifying.

as for picking a guy like ceci up........karlsson is one of, if not THE best d-man in the league and he couldn't pick cowen up last season (in fact cowen dragged him down). unlike forwards, where a good center can make wingers seem better.....I think it's MUCH harder for a d-man to pick up an inferior partner...it's a harder position to play IMO

I like you logic here, because that means that EK is on pace for a 116 point, +100 season.

Very fair points........ that said, he's a top 4D that is worth methot deal. Cap wise, he's 2m overpaid, Karlsson about 3m underpaid
