Looking at his WOWY numbers and, yeah, they need to get him away from MacDonald

I need to get something off my chest: AMac is a below average skater. I always hear he's a good one in his defense to prop him up, and I don't remotely see it. He's a fine passer with space, but he can't get any separation when he has the puck and that's why he's so susceptible to turnovers or dump outs. I've never seen him win a race to a puck. It's probably in part why he's so afraid to get walked and backs up through the NZ. It's just this short, choppy, ineffective skating. He always has his feet standing still when he has the puck and never skates with it because he is a below average skater.

Lyubimov continues to look like the player Hakstol sees when he watches VandeVelde on the ice through his VandeVelde colored glasses.

I'm still forming an opinion of him because his shifts aren't quite as frequent as others. But that said, he takes really good angles to the puck. I'm not killing VDV more than what a 13th/AHL forward could be, but I wonder if Lyubimov -- who I am one more misspelling from calling The Russian II -- is a guy who actually might score a goal or two based on hockey sense

At the very least he has the potential to be a better player.

He goes balls to the wall, is a great skater, physical, clearly has some underrated hands he has yet to showcase with his offensive black hole linemates. He was an excellent PKer in the KHL and for Russia too. He can do that. VDV is just the inferior version in every way to Lyuby.

I work on my skating a lot to be a good skater, so I pay attention to technique. His skating is just short, choppy, and there's zero strength to it. He's not poor on his edges, but he can't outrace anyone or move the puck himself because of it.

The crazy thing is that if you truly look around the league, there are worse guys than him out there on any given team

I don't always believe in "try hard/want to," but sometimes I just look at how hard Manning plays and wish MacDonald moved on the ice with that kind of conviction and purpose.

Manning's a limited player, we all know that. But he moves around the ice with purpose, with an edge, and you know that he is attempting to maximize what he does.

I could be reading MacDonald entirely wrong. But as someone who just watches as a fan, but watches a lot of hockey, sometimes I just don't think MacDonald's compete level is as high as some others

Is the ice awful or just really good and the Flyers aren't used to playing on a good surface?

It was an odd hit. Definitely he sticks his front leg out in an awkward way

I think he's giving effort and willing to sacrifice. Couturier is the same way in that he never looks like he's trying really hard, but that's just the way he operates.

I'm not gonna get upset about these first handful of games. They're missing three of their best possession guys.
