The D is horrible. The potential NHL level Dmen in the minors are probably 2 years away. We either overpay now for a Fowler or a Trouba or we just have to suck it up and hope that Babcock manages to get some NHL caliber minutes out of the D once in a while. Big ask, I know, but I would rather not overpay for a Fowler.

Honestly, the only reason Marincin could have possibly been getting top pairing is that mgmt was trying to inflate his value a la Phaneuf to get a little more at the deadline...

Marincin has no value. They will also not trade him. The need to play at least another 3 games to meet the 70 game minimum for the expansion draft. They need one dman to leave unprotected. He is worth more to leafs for this purpose then what ever late round pick or bottom of the barrel prospect a team would give up for him.

Agree. Patience is key. And we have Zaitsev who is looking beaut and should get better. Plus they have a chance to land a really good dman with their 1st this year. Or their many 2nds.

I think some decent dmen will be available next off season the week before the expansion draft. Teams will be willing to trade some players they can't protect, but believe will be claimed, for probably below fair value. Better to get something then lose them nothing.

Absolutely. This was always going to be another rebuilding year with a poor finish in the standings. Although I'm 99% sure they pick up Fowler if the Cowen buyout goes through

I think Babcock is keeping Reilly and Zaistev apart because they might be the two best d man we have and wants some balance. Judging by ice time I think Babcock has pretty good faith in Zee.

Not sure about the whole trouba thing, really can't stand guys that are young and star demanding, however if they get him for a good deal and Wil make us better than (frank) it go get him

Agree about Rielly and Zaitsev, it makes sense.

I'm wary of Trouba because of his trade demand, and I don't know if he's that great. I would lowball the Jets and not go any higher. I feel like if the Leafs aren't patient with acquiring D, and trade a forward, the hockey gods will turn it into a JVR for Schenn type result.
