The problem is stats don't give us information like:
- # of puck battles won (& then layer on to this stats on the relative distance between player and opposing player from the puck)
- # of times defenseman beaten on outside
- # of times shot was screened by own defenseman
- # of times opponent was effectively forced outside

and these things are good measures of defender quality that just can't be tracked by stats - you have to watch

- twiztedmike

Bingo plus how costly mistakes made are.

They have some merit but are not trustworthy as a whole.

I like Bobby Mac on the +/- regarding Marner last night, lol.

I think in the right context shot stats can be useful.

But, I think you have to take it one step back. For a shot to occur, you have to be in possession of the puck in the offensive zone with time and space to get your shot off. Tracking things like above and more will gets give you more comprehensive view of a player.

and even the most simple measure is how good the breakout is - making an effective pass from behind the goal line to your centre, or getting a puck up around the boards to your winger, or lobbing it out on a PK when its needed

the lineup is already too young and doesnt have the experience to hold a lead.

let the current kids get their feet wet before adding more youth to the lineup

- Dozzer

Is that what goaltending is called these days.

Jk, but personally, I think experience is overrated.
As an aside, listened to the Fan 590 this morning, and rene made a great point about why scoring is up this season. The players coming into the league are really the first crop that have had their own "skill" and "power skating" coaches. Much like personal goalie coaches and workshops changed the way the game was played in the early 2000's, we're seeing the same thing now happen with forwards. All these kids with such quick releases, and pinpoint shots to top corners is no accident.

yup.

and i suspect internally the leafs stats group is tracking things like this game by game.

i would expect the 4 guys they have should be breaking down every leafs game to this level at a minimum.

The canucks are 4- 0
Montreal is what 3-1
Oilers are 4-1 I think?

Leafs have lost 3 of 4.

Things seem to be trucking along as expected........except the Canucks thing. But Im fine if they finish middle of the pack.

Those winning records will be very short lived....Edmonton wont last ....neither will Vancouver....maybe Montreal only if Price is in net...

You guys are analyzing the league way too soon...especially the Leafs....wait at least 10 games

Why won't Edmonton? McDavid is going to take that team to the playoffs by himself. (frank) he is good

I think Edmonton is on their way up...they won't finish the season near the top but never underestimate the McDavid. Essentially, they won't be at the bottom this season, and may actually squeeze in.

As for Montreal, Weber is a big deal there, he's showing why people compared him to Pronger, and he's also a big reason why they're winning games even when Price isn't in net. It's a much different team, different culture. Already the PK Subban fans are seeing why the deal was made.

Vancouver has gotten good goaltending from Markstrom, and gotten lucky. They still remind me of Paul Maurice's Leaf teams.

Everything points to the Habs having a great season.

Even a "priceless" Habs would be a better team than last year.

This being said, obviously having Carey in net makes everything easier for everyone.

It felt so good to see him back in the Habs net.

His impact on the game is beyond what I thought it would be.

He's an amazing player.

Leafs need a Weber. I'm hoping Nielsen becomes a version of that at some point. Big, mean, good shot.

Now if someone post one where Archer is doing that to Pam, Lana, or one of the other girl's on that show, will people freak out?

Well people had me worried talking how it was obvious he's been declining and was apprently slower than a turtle riding a snail.

Everything i've seen so far makes me pretty happy about the whole trade.... The whole team has a better structure in place and the players have more cohesion.... Subban was the kind of guy who made these great individual plays but since you didn't know what he was doing, you couldn't pur yourself in a position to help and follow on the play.

It was amazing to watch for fans and the results show it worked, but I feel like it's better for the team to have a guy like Weber who's so effective but "predictable".
