the right answer is that is the way Hack wants it. - MBFlyerfan
By this logic, every coach every where ever is managing their team perfectly. The question was why Sean Couturier didn't see more time killing penalties in the early going of a penalty. A few people have asked. I don't think there anything wrong with asking this. |

Feanor, do you have the stats on whether or not Sean Couturier has been the lone forward to start and kill off a 3 on 5 against the Flyers since Bellemare has been here? I'm 100% positive that Couturier isn't. I would also like to know how often over the course of Coots career he has started a 3 on 5 over other defensive centers on the team.
If anyone knows this, this would be interesting. - SuperSchennBros
I dont know of anywhere that tracks 3v5 time as anything other than short handed. From my memory it has always mostly Coots and PEB |

No, they have their hands full generating all that defense in the bottom 6. |

I agree with you in that Couturier should be used more on the PK. Hak seems to like using VDV and PEB at the beginning of the PK (At least he did last year. We need more of a sample size before judging this year) and I don't understand why. They're not particularly good, so matching them up against opposing top units is a bad idea.
Ultimately, the Flyers should have crafted a bottom six with more offensive potential. Instead, they have mostly plugs and need the top 6 to generate almost all of the 5v5 offense. I think Hak is trying to save Couturier and Giroux for more 5v5 time.
This strategy could work if the bottom six could just break even at ES and excel on the PK. Unfortunately, neither of those things is true.
The third line finally came together last year when they put Gagner and Cousins together on it. Now, they've removed Cousins and replaced him with an inferior player in PEB, and removed Gagner and replaced him with a net front guy in Weise. Weise can be better, but he needs guys around him to make things happen. He's not going to get the puck through the neutral zone like Gagner did for them last year. Maybe Read can step up and fill that void. Raffl certainly can when he comes back from injury.
I like Hak's system and I think he's shown great restraint by not handcuffing young players, but I certainly don't think he's done a great job of optimizing the lineup on a game to game basis.

The video doesn't make poop up. Also what you're insinuating, is flat out incorrect. That can also be supported. |

Gagner not being on the team, is Hextall's decision, not Hakstol's. I for one am glad that Gagner was not brought back. Not a good player in my opinion, and certainly not a player I want on the 3rd line. I also favor Bellemare over Cousins as a player, but I agree that Bellemare is not really a 3rd line player. The Flyers have a whole at the 3rd line center spot, and I'm not sure Cousins in the answer there. |

so a defenseman goes leroy jenkins and pinches but fails to make an effective hit and a defenseman makes a lazy play that causes a turnover and a breakaway
both total team breakdowns...got it |
