Entire drafts are based on projections.
If not, people would just go up and pick names out of hats.
I haven't seen too many people dispute that Laine is projected to be an elite goal scorer.......he's 18 too. - golfingsince
Totally. Projections are only as good s the scouts consensus. Jamie Benn and Patrick Stefan are examples of failed projections. Either way, it is still premature to say Juolevi is anything but a OHL defenseman right now. I don't think a player can ever be handed a projected title of 1D or 2D unless he proves it and claims that title himself. In that regard I agree with you. However, I think you underestimate what scouts had said about him going into the draft. Him and Sergachev were the clear cut winners to go 1/2, in the top 10 of that draft. |

Agreed, apparently he had the best interview in years as well. As Canuck fans, we can all attest to the fact that toolsy players with poor hockey sense often bust. Because Juolevi is very intelligent he should hopefully have a high floor. He could be a number 4 dman or a number 1. Look forward to seeing how he does next training camp when he has packed on 20lbs. |

I wanted Dubois...There is a reason Sergachev scored more in junior and has made the NHL already. He was a man playing against boys. He is 55 pounds heavier than Juolevi. That's exactly my point, when people claim that Juolevi doesn't "project" as a 1D I think it's pretty stupid. He is a young skinny kid. He thinks the game at an elite level and skates well. when he adds 30 pounds he should be a force. Will he be a true number 1 (which is a bs subjective title), maybe, maybe not. Because of his age and size he is more of a project than many of the other top 15 picks. - CanuckDon
Sergachev has looked like garbage so far, he should be back in junior.
Being a true number 1 isn't as subjective as you think. Some D can carry games, some can't.
I'm really happy with the Juolevi pick, I wanted a Dman and he "projected" to be the best available. I wanted no part of PLD.
Do I think he'll be top pairing? yes
Do I think he'll dominate at both ends of the rink? probably not. |

He needs to get an NHL body first. Let him develop and hopefully dominate this year, giving JB a good problem to deal with. |

I've been a Burrows fan, but hoping this will change if he looks slow/tired. he has been fine so far in a 4th line role. and noticed him on the pk doing his job. |

I am not sure I get the comparison...Laine would go first overall most years...he is a can't miss prospect (just like Matthews ). - CanuckDon
So was Yakupov, Daigle, etc.

I would be happy with a top pairing Dman...look at what Edmonton just paid for a number 4 I am not sure what we have yet but he certainly has a history of rising to the occasion in big games which is great to see |

Gudbranson? Maybe even Edler? You'd think they'd have picked a Dman. |

Very true...I do believe that spectacular busts are less likely now. Scouting is far more advanced these days. Personally, I wouldn't be opposed to changing the draft age requirements. I am not sure drafting 17 year old kids is best for their development and it is so hard to project a kids potential when they haven't yet filled out. |

I see Juolevi possibly (hopefully) going the same route as Provorov. Reading back on his draft profile they are similar in that physically they weren't NHL bodies but extremely intelligent and skilled. If Juolevi can improve physically and be a consistent offensive contributor it bodes well for his progression as a top pairing D man |

We should be so lucky if Juolevi takes the same route that Provocop had taken. Provorov is an absolute beast of a player.
Juolevi really needs to bulk up though. His hockey IQ was evident during the pre-season. He just needs to get bigger and stronger. 1 or 2 years in Utica would not be the end of the world. |

They did cheat. No way that the Canucks were the only team to be able to fine those "extra" exhibition games. |

I dont think it would be ideal for him to spend 1 or 2 years in Utica, I really hope the only time he spends in the AHL is during the playoffs after his OHL season(s) has (have) ended. That high of a pick spending 2 years in Utica, would mean NHL rookie season at 22-23 for 5th overall would be shredded in this market |
