He's ranked #1 for the 2017 draft.

Yup...not a great skater, but neither is Nolan Patrick. He (Patrick) is another player who missed the 2016 draft by only a few days, so really he's a half a year older than most kids next draft.

I know Vantel doesn't agree but the sooner we get that high end C prospect in the system the better. JB should be looking at acquiring higher draft picks in lieu of trading them moving forward.

I think Benning said he's done trading picks, hopefully next year is our year to get a good center, the organization needs one badly!

I really wanted PLD last summer, now i'm hearing he's not a true center. Still happy with OJ, was just a little shocked.

After the Gubranson trade, Benning made it clear that he was done moving picks.

Still very early, but that's a good thing. The injuries and team depth will once again be the deciding factor.

On the canucks site they did a king of the rink segment for Horvat and they asked Sven who he thought should play Bo in a movie and he said Vince Vaughn because they both have giant heads

"Overall, the draft looks to be a fairly deep one. There lacks a truly special talent at the top, but it is made up by several powerful and exciting scoring forwards coming out of North America."

I was going to say it sounds like Edmonton is going to win again, but McJesus ruins that joke

I'm not knocking Juolevi, but I don't think he projects to be the dominant type at both ends of the rink. That's what I'd like to see from our #1D.
- golfingsince

How do you know what he projects to be? He is 18, 6'3 and 170 pounds. Nobody knows what his ceiling is.

projection: an estimate or forecast of a future situation or trend based on a study of present ones.

You're so defensive.

Let's not pretend that he's the guy you wanted before the draft. If he projected at that time to be a dominant at both ends of the rink Dman that plays 30 minutes a night people would have been drooling over him pre-draft.

Can he become that guy? maybe

Will he? probably not

Definitely an element of luck involved, seems like Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton have all had theirs....maybe it's our turn?
- LeftCoaster

Sure it's luck but the canucks have the ability to improve their chances. So it's not just random luck.

I think you both are too far in opposite ends of this. I think it is WAY too early to project him to be a Number 1 and it is WAY too early to count him out based on his size/weight/age currently OR how scouts/media estimated his draft position.

Between Juolevi, Sergachev, Chychrun, there weren't very many high profile names out there for D but I wouldn't take anything away from the fact that all 3 of these D were very much in the mix of being first rounders and scouts had them going all in the top 10, or somewhere in the top 30 (Chychrun). There is absolutely no point in trying to figure out a 18 year old defenseman's projection. They take soo long and its an endless argument until his 2nd/3rd pro season (in the show) where you can actually say anything else otherwise.

Entire drafts are based on projections.

If not, people would just go up and pick names out of hats.

I haven't seen too many people dispute that Laine is projected to be an elite goal scorer.......he's 18 too.

I wanted Dubois...There is a reason Sergachev scored more in junior and has made the NHL already. He was a man playing against boys. He is 55 pounds heavier than Juolevi. That's exactly my point, when people claim that Juolevi doesn't "project" as a 1D I think it's pretty stupid. He is a young skinny kid. He thinks the game at an elite level and skates well. when he adds 30 pounds he should be a force. Will he be a true number 1 (which is a bs subjective title), maybe, maybe not. Because of his age and size he is more of a project than many of the other top 15 picks.

I am not sure I get the comparison...Laine would go first overall most years...he is a can't miss prospect (just like Matthews ).
