It's as close to a must win as you're going to get in game three of the season. |

Yes, but the mystique behind Oakland was that they were run on a shoe string budget and had to be competitive. Boston used the same methods, but just outbid everybody to get who they wanted. - jmatchett383
thats because it is the only way that Oakland is competitive given their payroll constraints. If Billy Beane suddenly got an extra 50 million a year to burn, would he then be "buying" champinoships? The Red Sox did try to buy championships and couldnt. They stopped doing that to some extent. They routinely drafted well and developed players. Manny, Pedro...okay...but I dont really see many other comparisons to the Yankees. There were several Oakland A's type players on that winning roster |

Johnny Damon
Curt Schilling
Nomar Garciaparra
There were actually several player from those A's teams. They just got huge salaries when they went to Boston. There were only 2 teams that year over $100M, the Yankees and the Red Sox. While they didn't outspend the Yankees, they outspent every other team.
Again, I don't mind the strategy they used because, well, they had to. Just don't act like you're better than the Yankees for doing the same thing you always accused them of doing.
Edit: Angels and Mets were just north of $100M. Yankees and Boston were a distant #1 and #2. |

Nomar was drafted by the Red Sox and got traded...the other two I agree with even though I didn't see Damon as much of a "buy" compared to any other free agent
edit: pretty sure the red sox acquired a pick they used on Ellsbury in the Nomar deal as well |

Sorry, thought Nomar was drafted by the Cubs (other way around).
Yes, they drafted well...but they went out and spent $24M more than any other team sans New York. Acting like they didn't try to do what the Yankees did, which is spent big to get the players you target, is nonsense. Again, I have no problem with it, but (frank)ing own it. |

Is that what happened, or was it just not profitable? - MJL
http://www.tsn.ca/talent/...-fanager-creator-1.587383
Poraszka announced at a September hockey forum that he reached a deal in principal with a blog network to purchase General Fanager, which would allow him to quit his day job as a senior associate with SapientNitro to focus full-time on the development of the site. That was before a connection was made with the Las Vegas franchise.

Finally, a game that ends before midnight!
Rather than bump Cousins down to the 4th line, I'd like to see them give Lyubimov a shot. Their bottom six could use some more speed and size - BiggE

Nah he's on record as being against analytics...not that Tanner knows anything about analytics. In fact, if the guy who makes those HERO charts is ever hired away and the site goes down, Tanner is so (frank)ed.
It's going to be some awful organization who wants to get into advanced stats but doesn't know their head from their ass about them. Enter Tanner. |

If Crisp VDV gets a point tonight, he gets to stay in the lineup another 70 games as his reward. If he records a shot and is no worse than -3, he gets 40 games. If he is still alive after the game, 20 games. If he is not alive after the game, 10 games. |

Thanks for the info. Bettman needs to come up with a better excuse for not including cap information on NHL.com, than there isn't a thirst for it among the fans!

God forbid any of us know what a player makes, or where in the upper/lower body a player is hurt. The entire hockey world would come crashing down. |

Sorry but I don't trust eggheads who don't watch the games anymore than I trust medical doctors who don't watch Grey's Anatomy. It's why I get my hockey analysis from the philly.com comments section and my surgeries from a midwife. |
